    Notes: Summary Platelet activating factor (PAF) content and PAF-acetylhydrolase (PAFAH) activity were measured in the plasma and haematoma of 34 chronic subdural haematoma (CSH) patients. The plasma PAF level in patients with CSH was higher than that in healthy controls. Although there was no correlation between the plasma PAF levels and the interval between the onset of symptoms and the day of sampling, namely, the interval after bleeding, the haematoma PAF level gradually decreased according to the interval after the onset of symptoms. There was no difference between plasma PAFAH activity in patients with CSH and that in healthy controls, and haematoma enzyme activity gradually increased correlated with the interval between the onset of symptoms and surgery. In addition, the localization of PAF in haematoma capsules was histochemically determined. PAF was solely localized to the peri-sinusoidal vessels in the outer membrane of haematoma capsules. Based on these biochemical and histochemical studies, we speculated that PAF may play a role in the development of chronic subdural haematomas.

    Notes: Summary The plasma concentration of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B chain and the plasma platelet factor 4 (PF4) levels were measured in 17 healthy controls and 55 brain tumour patients. In the 17 normal controls, the plasma PDGF-B and PF4 levels were 523 ± 157 pg/ml (mean ± SD) and 84 ± 37 ng/ml, respectively. In the brain tumour patients, these values were 881 ± 854 pg/ml and 93 ± 64 ng/ml, respectively. The plasma PDGF-B concentration was elevated above the upper limit of normal individuals in 12 (22%) of the 55 patients. However, since the corresponding PF4 levels suggested the platelet activation, the increased plasma PDGF-B may have originated from platelets. To address this, platelet releasing experiments were performed on citrated blood samples from 5 normal individuals. The plasma PDGF-B and PF4 levels from the 17 normal controls and those observed in the platelet releasing experiments correlated with a regression line of Y = 240 + 4.86X (Y: PDGF, X: PF4). There were only 6 (11%) patients whose plasma PDGF-B level was elevated above the 95% confidence limit estimated from the corresponding PF4 value. In these patients, the tumour volumes were extensively large, and those elevated PDGF-B values decreased after treatment and became elevated again in three patients with recurrent glioblastoma. Although the plasma tumour-derived PDGF-B was detected only in an extensively large brain tumour, it might be a useful plasma marker evaluating the effects of therapy and prognosis in such patients.

    Notes: Summary Most of the major extracranial arteries have vasa vasorum which play an important role in some pathological conditions. However, in the intracranial arteries, the existence of vasa vasorum and their pathological implication have not been adequately investigated. We examined the distribution and incidence of vasa vasorum in the major cerebral arteries and their relationships to certain clinical factors in 50 autopsy cases performed between 1987 and 1994. By light microscopy, vasa vasorum were found in 36 of 50 patients. Of 36 patients, vasa vasorum in 30 cases were localizedly observed in the tunica adventitia and the in other 6 were distributed in the tunica media accompanied by intramural haemorrhage. Existence of vasa vasorum was more common in the proximal arteries (vertebral, internal carotid, and basilar arteries) than in the distal arteries (middle cerebral and anterior cerebral arteries). Vasa vasorum were found more frequently in aged patients with severe atherosclerosis and those with cerebrovascular diseases. Our results indicated that intracranial vasa vasorum existed with a higher frequency in the tunica adventitia of the vertebral and internal cerebral arteries, and the incidence of vasa vasorum related to severity of atherosclerosis. The development of vasa vasorum in the tunica media may reflect some pathological changes of cerebral arteries.

    Notes: The adsorbed state of ethylene on Pd(110) at 90 K and its thermal decomposition in the temperature region between 90 and 600 K have been studied by the use of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). At 90 K, ethylene is π bonded to the Pd(110) surface and is adsorbed almost disorderedly. The c(2×2)-C2H4 patches are formed near the saturation coverage (which corresponds to 0.58 C2H4 molecule per surface Pd atom). By heating the C2H4-saturated Pd(110) surface to 260 K, some C2H4 admolecules are desorbed intact and the remaining admolecules rearrange their adsorbed sites to form the c(2×2)-C2H4 structure. At above 300 K, almost all the C2H4 admolecules are dehydrogenated, and the ethynyl (CCH) species, H adatoms and unstable dehydrogenated species [possibly, vinyl (CHCH2) species] are formed; the C2H4 desorption occurs by the recombination of H adatoms and dehydrogenated species. The remaining H adatoms are desorbed as β-H2 at ∼325 K. By heating to 450–520 K, ethynyl is decomposed, and only carbon adatoms remain on Pd(110); the decomposition is accompanied by the H2 desorption. Structural models of chemisorbed C2H4 and CCH on Pd(110) are proposed.

    Notes: The adsorption of formic acid (HCOOH) on the Si(100)c(4×2), Si(100)(2×1), Si(100)9° vicinal and Si(111)(7×7) surfaces has been studied by means of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. Formic acid is partially dissociated to form the unidentate formate species (HCOO) and H adatoms on these surfaces at both 90 and 300 K. The formate species is bonded to the Si surface with a covalent bond formed between one of its oxygen atoms and the dangling bond of the surface Si atom. A condensed multilayer of molecular formic acid is formed after the Si surface is saturated with the formate species at 90–150 K. The thermal decomposition mechanism has been studied in detail. The decomposition temperatures of the formate species on Si(100) and Si(111) are ∼600 and 550 K, respectively. It appears that the surface steps do not play an important role in the Si–HCOOH interaction. As the formate-covered surface is exposed to atomic hydrogen, methylendiolate (H2COO) is formed on the Si surface.

    Notes: The adsorbed states of ethylene on the Si(100)c(4×2), Si(100)(2×1), and the Si(100) 9° vicinal surfaces have been studied using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Ethylene is nondissociatively chemisorbed on the Si(100) surface in the wide temperature range between 77 and ∼600 K, and is rehybridized to have a near sp3 hybridization state. The adsorbed structure is proposed in which ethylene is di-σ bonded to two adjacent Si atoms of the dimer at the Si(100) surface. The thermal decomposition of chemisorbed ethylene and the influence of steps on the adsorbed states of ethylene are discussed.

    Notes: High-resolution vibrational/electronic-transition electron energy loss spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and Auger electron spectroscopy have been used to study the oxidation of the Si(111) (7×7) surface at 300 K. From the initial stage (O2 exposure ∼1 L, fractional oxygen coverage θ∼0.2), an Si–Si bond breaking occurs, and atomic oxygen is adsorbed in the bridge site (between the first and second layers of Si substrate) as well as in the on-top site. Some molecular species (superoxide-like species) are also existent. With the increase in O2 exposure up to 100 L where θ∼1.5 is reached, the number of the Si–O–Si species in the selvedge region of Si substrate is greatly increased. By heating the surface pre-exposed to 1–100 L O2 at 850 K, the superoxide-like species are removed and the number of oxygen atoms in the on-top sites is decreased. With the increase in O2 exposure (0→100 L) and by heating (300→850 K), the bond angle of the Si–O–Si species is increased towards that of the vitreous SiO2. The Si oxide which is totally characteristic of vitreous SiO2 is not formed by exposing the Si(111) surface kept at 700 K to 10 000 L (10−5 Torr×103 s) oxygen. The effect of residual water–vapor adsorption has been carefully examined and minimized.
