Notes: Abstract Two mercapturic acids, i. e., N-acetyl-S-(1-cyano-2-hydroxyethyl)-l-cysteine (CHEMA) and N-acetyl-S(2-hydroxyethyl)-l-cysteine (HEMA), were isolated from the urine of rats dosed with four successive doses of oxiranecarbonitrile (glycidonitrile, GN), 5 mg/kg, a reactive metabolic intermediate of acrylonitrile (AN). GC-MS analysis of methylated urine extracts from both AN- and GN-dosed rats showed another mercapturate which was identified as N-acetyl-S-(1-cyanoethenyl)-l-cysteine (1-CEMA) methyl ester using an authentic reference sample. The mass spectrum of this compound was very similar to that of a methylated metabolite of AN tentatively identified by Langvardt et al. (1980) as N-acetyl-3-carboxy-5-cyanothiazane (ACCT). In contrast, no ACCT was found in rats dosed with either GN or AN. Hence, there is no evidence for the formation of ACCT or its isomers in rats dosed with AN or GN. The methyl ester of 1-CEMA is formed artificially by dehydration of CHEMA methyl ester in the injector of the gas chromatograph.

Notes: Summary A gas-chromatographic method for the determination of the total organic fraction (TOF) present in the total particulate matter (TPM) of mine aerosols and the analysis of this fraction by gas chromatography — mass spectrometry is presented. The method is statistically evaluated and the standard deviation is calculated. The method for the determination of TOF was checked by a series of analyses of TPM in an iron-ore mine and in a deep mine for magnesite.

Notes: Polymeric Dihydroquinolines, which are commonly used as antioxidants for macromolecular systems, were prepared by acid-catalyzed condensation of acetone with aniline. The final products may differ in quality according to the purity of the starting materials and conditions of preparation. In the present work, three commercial antioxidants of the type of polymeric 2,2,4-rimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline were mutually compared from the chemical point of view. Some of the components of the antioxidants were identified by mass spectrometry after prior separation using GPC and LLC-RP.

Notes: ---This paper outlines the possibilities of selectivity and sensitivity enhancement in measuring PCDD/F congeners using an ion trap GC-MS/MS. The pressure of the collision gas and the collision energy were optimized. The modified GC-MS/MS method was applied to the determination of PCDDs and PCDFs in human and fish tissues. Limits of quantification were about 1 pg/g of fat for all seventeen 2378 PCDD/Fs tested (starting amount of fat, 2 g).
