    Notes: An investigation of elevated concentrations of nickel and chromium in certain ground water samples collected at Williams Air Force Base (AFB) indicated that type 304 stainless steel well materials are the source. Chloride in the ground water has apparently caused crevice corrosion of the stainless steel well screens installed during site characterization. An evaluation of site geochemistry suggested that chromium released from the well screen would precipitate, while nickel would remain dissolved. Thus, low-flow purging and sampling significantly reduces the chromium found in the ground water samples because such sampling minimizes the collection of artificially entrained particulates. In contrast to chromium, nickel concentrations did not decrease during low-flow purging and sampling, indicating that it is dissolved. Nickel and chromium concentrations are both low following high-volume purging when turbidity levels are stabilized below 10 nephelometric turbidity units prior to sampling. In the latter case, chromium concentration is low because particulate collection is minimized, and nickel concentration is low because of increased dilution. Based on these results, it is recommended that elevated levels of nickel and chromium in ground water samples collected from stainless steel monitoring wells be carefully evaluated, because well materials may be the source. In addition, although low-volume purging is increasingly becoming the sampling method of choice, high-volume purging may be a useful means of determining whether the well materials influence nickel and chromium concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract. Psychological disturbances may lead patients to neglect oral hygiene. This study investigated whether a number of psychosocial factors (depression, state and trait anxiety, total and average perceived stress, and loneliness) could predict dental plaque levels in patients with adult onset rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and routine chronic adult periodontitis (RCAP), before periodontal treatment. It was also examined whether RPP and RCAP patients differed on plaque and smoking. Plaque was scored in a sample of 6 teeth in each of 80 subjects, 40 with RPP, 40 with RCAP, before psychosocial questionnaire completion. Multiple regression was performed between plaque as the dependent and psychosocial factors, gender, education, form of periodontitis and smoking as independent variables. Only gender contributed significantly to prediction of plaque, t=-2.70, p=0.01, partial regression coefficient -0.37, 95% CI; -0.64 to -0.10, indicating that plaque was on average 0.37 lower for females than males, after adjusting for the other predictor variables. It was confirmed that RPP and RCAP patients did not differ significantly on plaque, univariate r-test(69.99)= 0.65, p=0.13. However, RPP patients smoked significantly more than RCAP patients t(69.72)=2.36, p=0.02. There was also a marginally significant correlation between depression and smoking, r=0.l6, p=0.01. One possible reason advanced for the lack of an association between psychosocial factors and plaque, and the absence of a difference in plaque between RPP and RCAP patients is the fact that the patients involved in the present study were seen as secondary referrals. The gender difference in plaque levels and the greater incidence of smoking in RPP patients may be of significance in planning interventions with patients with periodontitis.

    Notes: Abstract On the basis of clinical observations, some periodontologists have suggested an association between psychosocial factors such as depression, stress and anxiety, and adult onset rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP). This study investigated more formally possible associations between a number of relevant psychosocial factors and RPP The significance of the psychosocial variables was assessed by comparing 3 groups: 50 patients with RPP, 50 patients with routine chronic adult periodontitis (RCAP). and 50 patients without significant periodontal destruction (controls). It was anticipated that the RPP group would show higher levels of psychosocial maladjustment than the RCAP and control groups. A between-subjects multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that the combined psychosocial variables were significantly related to the periodontal diagnosis. 2 psychosocial factors, depression and loneliness, were significant in distinguishing between groups. The RPP group presented significantly increased depression and loneliness compared to the RCAP and control groups. Future research is indicated to further clarify the significance of these psychosocial differences in relation to the onset and progression of RPP.

    Notes: The reproductive biology of blacknose sharks Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean was studied by examining specimens collected in the coastal waters of South Carolina. Males begin the maturation process between 875 and 910 mm fork length (LF), as indicated by the presence of functional claspers and siphon sacs. The presence of vitellogenic oocytes and developing oviducal glands and uteri indicated that females begin to mature at c. 870 mm LF. Length at which 50% of the population reached maturity was 896 and 964 mm LF, equivalent to 4·3 and 4·5 years, for males and females, respectively. Gonado-somatic indices suggested that spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis began after December. Mating took place during the end of May and the beginning of June. Fertilization occurred during late June and early July, suggesting that female blacknose sharks were capable of sperm storage. Based on the timing of fertilization and occurrence of females carrying near-term pups in late May and early June, the gestation period for blacknose sharks was c. 11 months. Female blacknose sharks reproduced biennially based on the absence of vitellogenic oocytes in near-term females and there being no indication of vitellogenesis in postpartum females. Male blacknose sharks were capable of reproducing annually as indicated by turgid genital ducts, which were observed in all mature males collected during late May and early June.

    Notes: A parallel adaptive dynamic relaxation (ADR) algorithm has been developed for non-linear structural analysis. This algorithm has minimal memory requirements, is easily parallelizable and scalable to many processors, and is generally very reliable and efficient for highly non-linear problems. Performance evaluations on single-processor computers have shown that the ADR algorithm is reliable and highly vectorizable, and that it is competitive with direct solution methods for the highly non-linear problems considered. The present algorithm is implemented on the 512-processor Intel Touchstone DELTA system at Caltech, and it is designed to minimize the extent and frequency of interprocessor communication. The algorithm has been used to solve for the non-linear static response of two- and three-dimensional hyperelastic systems involving contact. Impressive relative speed-ups have been achieved and demonstrate the high scalability of the ADR algorithm. For the class of problems addressed, the ADR algorithm represents a very promising approach for parallel-vector processing.
