Notes: Summary The three-dimensional ultrastructure of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and mesangial matrix (MM) at an early stage of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus in rats was examined by the quick-freezing and deep-etching method. In diabetic rats, the GBM inner layer was diffusely enlarged and the meshwork structure not only in the GBM middle layer but also in the MM became markedly irregular due to the rupture of fine fibrils. This irregularity and enlargement of the mesh pores in diabetic rats developed during the experimental period and was significantly different from results in control rats. Insulin treatment from 1 week after STZ injection had significant effects in preventing the ultrastructural changes in the GBM and MM. It is suggested that early insulin treatment has significant effects in preventing size barrier disturbance of GBM and MM in STZ-induced diabetes.

Notes: Summary An autopsy case of a 52-year-old man suffering from chronic manganese poisoning (CMP) is reported with determination of the manganese distribution in the brain. The patient had been working in a manganese ore crushing plant since 1965. In 1967 he began to complain of difficulties in walking and diminished libido. Later, he developed various neuro-psychiatric symptoms including euphoria, emotional incontinence, masked face, monotonous speech, “cock-walk”, increased muscle tone, weakness of upper and lower extremities, tremor of the eye lids, and exaggeration of knee jerks. The major neuro-pathological change was degeneration of the basal ganglia, in which the pallidum was severely affected. The pallidum discolsed a loss and degeneration of nerve cells, which was especially marked in the medial segment, a prominent decrease of myelinated fibers, and moderate astrocytic proliferation. The substantia nigra was intact. Distribution of manganese in the brain of the present case of CMP was determined using flameless atomic absorption spectrometry and compared with control cases and also a case of Parkinson's disease (PD). There was no significant difference between the control cases and the case of PD in average concentration of manganese and its ditribution in the brain. The present case of CMP showed no elevation in average concentration of manganese in the brain. However, there were some changes in its distribution. Thus, the continuance of neurological disorders in CMP is not linked to an elevated manganese concentration itself in the brain. CMP appears to be different from PD in neuropathology and manganese behavior in brain.

Notes: Abstract The existence of extensive autosomal polymorphism due to pericentric inversions in a colony of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, has been reported (Arakaki and Sparkes, personal communication). A background of intersubspecific hybridization was suspected to have contributed to the observed polymorphism. The present study describes findings on two separate subspecies, P. m. hollisteri and P. m. bairdii. Autosomal polymorphism existed within each subspecies. In P. m. bairdii, the two polymorphic autosomal pairs were identified. In one pair, a large subterminal element was homologous to an acrocentric of comparable size, while in the other pair, a small mediocentric and an acrocentric were homologous. Among splenic cells of animals made heteromorphic for the larger of the two autosomal pairs, the tendency toward reconstitution of homomorphic cell types was observed. This was taken as evidence of somatic segregation among immunologically competent cells.

Notes: Abstract Chondrostean and holostean fish of today are leftover relics: they share some characteristics with the venturesome crossopterygian fish, which launched the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates about 280 million years ago. The chromosome complements and DNA values of one chondrostean and two holostean species as well as one holocephalian species were studied. Their DNA values varied from 37% to 50% of that of mammals, and three of the species contained dot-like microchromosomes in their diploid complements. Their genome size and karyological characteristics are quite similar to those possessed by one group of reptiles and by avian species.

Notes: Langmuir, Freundlich, BET, Harkins and Jura, Halsey, Smith, Henderson, and Chung and Pfost equations were used to fit experimental moisture sorption data at 20°C for kudzu, sweet potato, corn, potato, rice, wheat, and snake gourd starches. Goodness of fit (from calculated average residue), standard deviation, and standard error and range of water activity indicated Henderson and Chung and Pfost equations fitted the data well over a wide aw range to 0.85. The large value of constants in Henderson and Chung and Pfost equations indicated stability of the microporous structure to moisture sorption. For larger constants, the microporous structures were more stable.

Notes: Moisture sorption characteristics of kudzu starch and sweet potato starch were investigated based on the results of moisture sorption isotherms at 11°C, 20°C and 30°C, thermal analysis, isosteric heat of sorption and entropy of sorption. The water of crystallization in sweet potato starch was strongly retained compared with that in kudzu starch. Differences in amount of moisture sorbed between kudzu starch and sweet potato starch seemed to be attributable to the stability of the microscopic structure. The interaction of moisture-sweet potato starch was stronger than that of moisture-kudzu starch. Amount of moisture sorbed and strength of moisture-starch binding of the starches, preheated to 110°C, decreased compared with those of the starches vacuum-dried at 20°C because of release of water from the amorphous part of the starch granule.

Notes: Adsorption characteristics of methyl orange were investigated on kudzu, sweet potato, corn, rice, wheat, potato and snake gourd starches. No adsorption of methyl orange, an anionic dye, was observed on potato starch and snake gourd starch because of the presence of phosphate esters. Adsorption isotherms were found to fit both the Langmuir equation and Freundlich equation in all others. The degree of adsorption by kudzu, sweet potato, corn and wheat starches was related to the number of hydroxyl groups. We suggested methyl orange was confined to a monolayer on surface hydroxyl groups of the starches.

Notes: Moisture sorption hysteresis loops of kudzu starch and sweet potato starch were investigated to help understand the nature of the adsorption-desorption process. The second adsorption isotherms were above the first adsorption isotherms for kudzu starch and sweet potato starch preheated to 110°C. This was explained as an increase in the number of hydrophilic sites due to rupturing of hydrogen bonds. The hysteresis loop for kudzu starch was greater than that for sweet potato starch. This was interpreted as a difference in mesopore volume.

Notes: The effects of filtering through bleaching media on decrease of peroxide value (PV) of autoxidized soybean oil were investigated to improve its quality. Sixteen kinds of filtering and bleaching media were employed. The standard activated clay was the most effective in decreasing the peroxides in autoxidized soybean oil. The relations between the decrease of PV and the physical or the chemical properties of the media were examined. It was found that peroxides are reduced in proportion to the amount of acid at the highest acid strength range + 1.5–5.6 rather than amount of acid at the lower acid strength range, total amount of acid or specific surface area of medium.
