Notes: Abstract —Borehole seismograms from local earthquakes in the aftershock region of the 1984 western Nagano Prefecture, Japan earthquake were analyzed to measure the frequency-dependent characteristics of P- and S-wave attenuation in the upper crust. The records from a three-component velocity seismometer at the depth of 145m exhibit high S/N-ratio in a wide frequency range up to 100 Hz. Extended coda normalization methods were applied to bandpass-filtered seismograms of frequencies from 25 to 102 Hz. For the attenuation of high-frequency P and S waves, our measurements show Q P -1≃ 0.052ƒ-0.66 and Q S -1≃ 0.0034ƒ-0.12 respectively. The frequency dependence of the quality factor of S waves is very weak as compared with that of P waves. The ratio of Q P -1/Q S -1 is larger than unity in the entire analyzed frequency range.

Notes: Abstract —We propose a new model to physically explain the seismic quiescence precursory to a large interplate earthquake. A numerical simulation is performed to quantitatively examine possible stress changes prior to a great interplate earthquake in a subduction zone. In the present study, the frictional force following a laboratory-derived friction law, in which the friction coefficient is dependent on slip rate and slip history, is assumed to act on a dip-slip fault plane of infinite width in a uniform elastic half-space. The values of friction parameters are determined so that the result of numerical simulation may explain some properties of great interplate earthquakes in subduction zones, such as the recurrence interval and the seismic coupling coefficient. The result of simulation reveals that significant quasi-stable sliding occurs prior to a great earthquake and, accordingly, stresses are changed on and around the plate boundary. In a relatively wide area of the overriding continental plate, the compres sional horizontal-stress perpendicular to the trench axis is decreased for a few years before the occurrence of a great earthquake. This decrease in regional compressional stress may account for the appearance of seismic quiescence prior to a great interplate earthquake.

Notes: Abstract —A significant seasonality is found in the occurrence time of past great earthquakes (M≥ 7.9) in the northwestern margin of the Philippine Sea plate. Among the thirteen earthquakes cataloged, five took place in December, and all the earthquakes are included in the seven months from August to February. The probability that such a skewed distribution occurs by chance is as small as 2.0%. This seasonal concentration of earthquakes suggests that a small stress increase may trigger an earthquake when the future focal zone is at a critical condition to release a large rupture. As a candidate factor of the earthquake triggering, we tested a possibility of stress change caused by annual variation of the atmospheric pressure. However, the incremental stress is no larger than 30 Pa, and it hardly accounts for the seasonality of the great earthquakes.

Notes: Abstract The cyclicity and intensity of gastric motlity were examined following glucose injection into the portal vein with an intragastric balloon in anesthetized rats. Enhanced gastric motility caused by insulin administration was influenced by 4 mM glucose (25 μl) injected into the portal vein; glucose provoked a shift in the cyclicity power spectrum without any change in intensity. The peak power spectrum shifted from 4.0–5.0 cpm to 2.0–3.0 cpm. Hepatic branch vagotomy abolished the response. The results suggest that glucose signals in the hepatic vagal branch modulate the cyclicity of gastric motiligy.

Notes: Abstract Gastric acid outputs caused by glucose injection into the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) were examined in insulin hypoglycemia with or without estradiol-17β (EST) administration in bilaterally ovariectomized (OV) female rats. The basal level of acid output was higher in OV rats without EST than in OV rats with EST. When acid response was expressed as the percentage change, glucose injection into the LHA decreased acid output in a dose-dependent fashion in OV rats, while, in OV rats with EST, glucose injection into the LHA also reduced acid output without dose dependency. It was also noted that the threshold concentration of glucose that induced an acid response was lower in OV rats without EST than in OV rats with EST. These findings suggest that glucose-sensitive neurons responsible for gastric acid secretion can be modulated by estrogen at the LHA level.

Notes: Summary Electrical stimulation of the paraventricular nucleus depressed the gastric acid output of adrenalectomized male rats of which gastric acid output had been induced by insulin hypoglycemia. Electrical stimulation of the pituitary stalk produced a similar secretory response, but the response was abolished by bilateral lesion of the paraventricular nucleus. These findings allow us to speculate that the paraventricular nucleus is capable of modulating gastric acid secretion, and suggest that the nucleus has a neural connection between the neurohypophysis and the system relevant to gastric acid secretion.
