    Notes: Summary The initial dose-escalating clinical trial of a novel calcium antagonist, AT877, in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage is reported. AT877 is characterized by its strong spasmolytic activity, its inhibition of intracellular calcium ion activity, and the inhibiton of several protein kinases. A total of 113 patients (Hunt and Hess grades I to IV) who had undergone surgery within 3 days of aneurysmal rupture entered the study. Patients were divided into 5 groups according to the total daily dose of AT877: I: 20 mg; II: 40 mg; III: 60 mg; IV: 90 mg; and V: 120–180 mg. AT877 was given by intravenous infusion over 30 min two or three times a day for 14 days after surgery. Although AT877 did not completely abolish angiographic vasospasm, severe vasospasm was seen less frequently in patients given higher doses. Vasospasm was the cause of a poor clinical outcome (Glasgow outcome scale rating 3 or greater) in 19%, 7%, 9%, 8%, and 6% of the patients in groups I to V, respectively. The results indicated a favourable clinical effect of AT877 at doses above 40 mg per day. Only mild hypotension was seen, even when 60 mg of AT877 was infused over 30 min. AT877 appears to be effective in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage. Part of its effect may be attributable to protection of the brain from ischaemic insults due to chronic cerebral vasospasm. However, the drug still needs to be evaluated in a placebo-controlled double-blind trial (which is currently being carried out).

    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. To investigate whether proinsulin C peptide influences sympathetic nerve activity directly or indirectly through parasympathetic nerve activity. Methods. The proliferative response of splenic lymphocytes to Concanavalin A (ConA response) which is known to be suppressed by subjection of rats to footshock or intracerebroventricular injection of corticotropin-releasing factor through sympathetic nerve activation was measured. Effect of C peptide alone or before subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor was examined. Results. Intraperitoneal injection of C peptide was without effect on the basal ConA response, while subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor lowered it. In contrast, prior injection of C peptide obviated the footshock and corticotropin-releasing factor-induced suppression of the response. When given intracerebroventricularly, C peptide was also effective at much smaller doses. Prior injection of atropine cancelled the C-peptide effects. Conclusion/interpretation. Our results indicate that C peptide counteracts the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte proliferation in an atropine-sensitive manner. Thus, C peptide probably activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the afferent mechanism, that in turn antagonizes the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte functions.     Notes: Abstract The paper contains the results of extensive single-point hot-wire and resistance-thermometer measurements in a wall jet on a heated concave wall with an external free stream. It is found that the turbulence in the inner (wall) and outer layers is sensitive to the distortion produced by the curved wall, broadly confirming current views of these effects. The effect on the turbulence of streamline curvature is stabilising in the outer layer, destabilising in the inner. Consequently the point of zero shear stress is closer to the point of maximum mean velocity than in flat and convex wall jets with which these new results are compared. The rate of growth is about 80% of that of the equivalent flat wall flow, and about half that of the convex wall flow. Changes in the wall shear stress and heat flux, which are increased relative to the flat wall flow, are significant but less than the changes in the corresponding convex wall flow. The greatest changes occur in the triple products.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes an experimental study of the mutual interference between two spheres placed on a plane boundary. The experiment was carried out in an N. P. L. type wind-tunnel having a working section of 500×500×2000 mm3 in size at a Reynolds number of 4.74×104. The surface-pressure distributions of two spheres were measured for the various relative positions of two spheres and the drag, side-force, and lift coefficients were determined from surface-pressure distributions. The separation of the flow and the formation of vortices were observed by the method of visualization. The distributions of velocities, and turbulent intensities of the flow past two spheres were measured. The experimental results for two spheres were compared with those of a single sphere.

    Notes: : The loaf volume decreased on the addition of soybean protein isolate (SPI) to bread. When phosphatidylcholine was added to the ingredients, including SPI, the adverse effect of SPI on the loaf volume could be counteracted. The addition of phosphatidylcholine showed little effect on the rheological properties of dough. It was shown by confocal microscopy that phosphatidylcholine was associated with gluten in the dough. The function of phosphatidylcholine could not be replaced by phosphatidylethanolamine, phospatidic acid, or lysophospatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine showed different effects depending on the phosphatidylcholine molecular species.
