    Notes: Abstract Biocatalytic desulfurization is still not a commercial technology, but conceptual engineering and sensitivity analyses have shown that the approach is very promising. The purpose of this paper is to investigate further some aspects of the biodesulphurization pathways, discussing the non-destructive pathway with the well-known Rhodococcus rhodochrous IGTS8. Findings revealed byproducts, such as 2′-hydroxybiphenyl (HBP), sulfite and sulfate, obtained by the desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), to exert an inhibiting effect. The results suggest that IGTS8 may follow two different metabolic pathways in stationary-growth-phase cells or under growing conditions. The first pathway is characterized by oxidative steps, which convert DBT to DBT sulfoxide and to DBT sulfone. The sulfone is transformed to 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzene sulfinate and then to HBP and sulfite by a sulfinic acid hydrolase. In the second pathway the sulfone is further oxidized to 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzene sulfonate and then to HBP and sulfate by a sulfonic acid hydrolase. Experiments using benzene sulfonic acid suggest that the sulfonic acid hydrolase is an induced enzyme.

    Notes: An enzymatic system capable of degrading cyanidin-3-glucoside in the absence of phenols is present in the skin of sweet cherries; contrarily, the pulp homogenate degraded the anthocyanin only in the presence of phenols. The degradation of this pigment as a function of pH was studied for two polyphenol oxidases isolated from the fruit pulp on DEAE-cellulose with chlorogenic acid, D (+) catechine and pyrocatechol substrates. The decoloration was influenced by the anthocyanin structure at different pH and by the nature of the quinone obtained by enzymatic oxidation. The anhydrobase appeared to be the form of the anthocyanin most susceptible to oxidation. The degradation occurred according to the oxidation kinetics of the phenol substrate and was inhibited by ascorbic acid, indicating that the quinone's degradation of the anthocyanin occurred by a consecutive-type mechanism.

    Notes: Summary The microbial degradation of organic sulfur compounds was examined in aerobic conditions employing a pure culture of aPseudomonas sp., isolated from the soil. The effect ofn-alkanes on the degradation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) showed that the assimilation of the sulfur compound by the microorganism is favoured byn-dodecane. Moreover, the saturated fraction was seen to enhance the degradation of the sulfur compounds to be found in a deasphaltenated heavy oil.

    Notes: Summary n-Alkanes affect the degradation of aromatic sulfur compounds both in aerobic and in anaerobic conditions. Some authors have reported anaerobic desulfurization by sutfate-reducing bacteria. These catalytic reactions are biphydrodesulfurizations (BHDS). n-Dodecane has a barrier or carrier effect on benzothiophene degradation in the absence (growing cell condition) or presence (resting cell condition) of hydrogen in the head space of the batch. In addition, thermodynamic factors are very important in benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene degradation by the microorganism Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.

    Notes: The use of 13X zeolite (0.1-0.4-mm granules), treated with 2N and 0.01N HCI, 0.01M citric acid, 0.1M citric-phosphate buffer (pH 3.6), and in untreated form to adsorb glucose oxidase of fungal origin and microbial catalase was examined. Physicochemical analysis of the support demonstrated that its crystalline structure, greatly altered by the HCl and buffer, could be partially maintained with citric acid. The specific adsorption of the enzymes increased with decreasing pH and proved to be considerable for all the supports. The stability with storage at 25°C is strictly correlated with the titrable acidity of the activated zeolite expressed as meq NaOH/g and with pH value of the activation solution. It proved to be lower than 55 h for both enzymes if adsorbed on zeolite treated with 2N HCl, and 15-fold and 30-fold higher for glucose oxidase and catalase adsorbed, respectively, on zeolite treated with the 0.1M citric-phosphate buffer and 0.01M citric acid. The specific adsorption of glucose oxidase and catalase was, respectively, 1840 U/g at pH 3.0 and 6910 U/g at pH 5.0. Their half-life at 25°C with storage at pH 3.5 for the former and at pH 5.0 for the latter was 800 and 1560 h vs. 40 and 110 h for the corresponding free enzymes.

    Notes: Summary A new solvent system has been found which, in comparison with the solvent system butanol — glacial acetic acid — water (BAW), permits a sharper paper chromatographic separation of the 3-monoglucosides and the 3,5-diglucosides of the six common anthocyanidins. Some solvent systems have also proved successful for thin-layer chromatography on silica gel of several mixtures from different sources, obtaining sharp resolution with precoated plates without any adsorbent activation.
