Notes: [Auszug] To determine if this is the case we injected a suspension of asbestos fibres into the stomachs of rats. The suspension was prepared by shaking 2.5 g of chrysotile asbestos (Johns Manville No. 7RFO2) in 500 ml of water in a graduated cylinder. The suspension was allowed to settle for 30 min and the ...

The asbestos fibres in 400 ml. samples of beverages and water were concentrated by centrifuging in excess of 16,000^, drying at 100 C and ashing at 500 C12. The ash was taken up in 1 ml. of distilled water and ...

Notes: Abstract Twenty male Wistar rats were used in one life-time study and 80 in another to determine the chronic effects of 1% dietary chrysotile asbestos. Half the rats in each study were fed a rat chow diet containing 1% asbestos and 5% corn oil while the other half received the same diet without asbestos. Six malignant tumors were found in the treated group in the first study compared to one in controls. None of these were associated with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. Eleven malignant tumors were found in each group in the second study but there were two malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract in rats given asbestos and none in controls. In a third study 20 rats were divided into two groups and one group fed 1% asbestos for 6 weeks. Analysis of the tissues showed higher levels of asbestos in all tissues than in controls with highest levels in the omentum followed by the brain, lung, liver, blood and kidney. It was concluded that trace amounts of ingested asbestos can penetrate the walls of the gastrointestinal tract of rats but evidence to show that it can cause cancer was inconclusive.
