    Notes: Water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile strength (TS), and elongation (E) were investigated in laminated methyl cellulose/corn zein-fatty acid films. They were prepared by casting corn zein-fatty acid solutions onto methyl cellulose films. WVP decreased as chain length and concentration of fatty acids increased. The TS of laminated edible film containing palmitic acid decreased as palmitic acid increased. The TS of films containing stearic-palmitic acid blends showed similar trends but there were no significant differences among blends. The TS of the film containing lauric acid was maximum at 30% lauric acid concentration. The E values for films containing fatty acids varied inversely with TS.

    Notes: Ecthyma gangrenosum is a well recognized cutaneous manifestation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in immunocompromised patients. Most cases of ecthyma gangrenosum have been associated with concomitant septicaemia. However, ecthyma gangrenosum rarely develops due to Ps. aeruginosa in the absence of bacteraemia. We report a rare case of a nonsepticaemic form of ecthyma gangrenosum presenting as a large solitary necrotic ulcer in a patient with acute myelogenous leukaemia. A culture from the lesion revealed the presence of Ps. aeruginosa, but the results of repeated blood cultures were negative. Histological examination revealed numerous tiny eosinophilic bacilli in the dermis and panniculus with Gram's stain.

    Notes: Glandular schwannoma is a rare variant of schwannoma characterized by the presence of glands in an otherwise typical schwannoma. We report a patient with benign glandular schwannoma occurring on the scalp, a site not previously reported. Histologically, a well-defined, encapsulated oval nodule was observed in the subcutaneous tissue. The nodule was composed of a spindle cell component and glandular structures. The spindle cell component stained positively for S-100 protein. All of the glandular epithelium stained with CAM 5.2 and epithelial membrane antigen but not with S-100 protein. The glandular epithelium was focally positive for carcinoembryonic antigen. The histogenesis of the glandular elements in these tumours is still debated. The variable size of the glandular structures in our case was evidence against an entrapped normal sweat gland origin. The glandular epithelium did not stain with S-100 protein at all, but stained with CAM 5.2, which did not support a direct metaplastic origin of the epithelial elements from the schwannian component. A few scattered CAM 5.2-positive cells and microglandular structures in our case may be the initial differentiating epithelial elements possibly derived from pluripotential neural crest cells.

    Notes: : Irradiation effects on biogenic amines (BAs) and microbiological populations of Korean fermented soybean paste were investigated during fermentation. Soybean paste was prepared and irradiated with doses of 5,10, and 15 kGy, and then fermented at 25 °C for 12 wk. Bacillus spp. and lactic-acid bacteria decreased by irradiation but increased during fermentation. Biogenic amines detected were putrescine, cadaverine, β-phenylethylamine, spermidine, spermine, tryptamine, histamine, tyramine, and agmatine. A significant difference was not observed in BA content between control and irradiated samples immediately after gamma irradiation. However, 4 kinds of BAs, putrescine, tryptamine, spermidine, and histamine, showed significant reduction by irradiation during fermentation (P 〈 0.05).

    Notes: Abstract  The role of intrapancreatic neurons in the action of cholecystokinin (CCK) on pancreatic exocrine secretion of the totally isolated, perfused rat pancreas was investigated. Intrapancreatic neurons were activated by applying electrical field stimulation (EFS) to the isolated pancreas for 45 min. When applying EFS, spontaneous pancreatic secretions of fluid and amylase increased until the second 15-min period of EFS and then decreased during the third 15-min period. Atropine (2 µM) notably reduced the EFS-evoked pancreatic secretions of fluid and amylase. The CCK-induced (10 pM) pancreatic secretions of fluid and amylase elevated further in the first 15-min period of EFS and then gradually resumed to the levels observed during application of CCK alone in the third 15-min period of EFS. However, the CCK-induced pancreatic secretions remained elevated even in the third 15-min period of EFS when an action of endogenous somatostatin was inhibited by cyclo-(7-aminoheptanonyl-Phe-d-Trp-Lys-Thr[BZL]) (10 nM) or pertussis toxin (200 ng/ml). EFS further elevated spontaneous exocrine secretion by the cysteamine-treated (300 mg/kg) pancreas, but this was markedly reduced, to normal levels, by infusing somatostatin (100 pM). EFS increased the numbers of immunoreactive somatostatin cells in the Langerhans’ islets. The results indicate that intrapancreatic neuronal activation influences CCK-induced pancreatic secretions in a dual-phase pattern in the rat: an increase during the early phase and a decrease during the late phase. Endogenous somatostatin released from the islets appears to inhibit the enhancing effect of neuronal activation on CCK-induced pancreatic secretion. Of the intrapancreatic neurons, the cholinergic ones appear to predominate in EFS’s effects on CCK-induced pancreatic secretion.

    Notes: Abstract  A novel type of bioreactor was successfully developed for the production of taxol and its precursors by culturing cells of Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew) on a pilot-scale. Rapidly growing cell lines were selected from callus cultures derived from immature embryos of yew. The cells were inoculated in 20-l capacity bioreactors of different types to test the growth performance. The models of small-scale bioreactors incorporated in this study included a balloon-type bubble bioreactor (BTBB), a bubble-column bioreactor (BCB), a BCB with a split-plate internal loop, a BCB with a concentric draught-tube internal loop, a BCB with a fluidized bed bioreactor, and two different models of stirred tank reactors. Among the reactors, BTBB appeared to be the most efficient in promoting cell growth. The doubling time of cell growth in BTBB was 12 days with a 30% inoculation cell density. The optimum time for medium replacement or feeding was 12–15 days after inoculation as determined by monitoring both the levels of sugars and medium conductivity. When yew tree cells were grown in different sizes (100–500-l) of BTBBs, more than 70% cell viability was recorded at the time of harvest. The growth pattern of the cells in the pilot-scale BTBB appeared to be the same as that of cells in the 20-l bioreactors. Approximately 3 mg/l of taxol and 74 mg/l total taxanes were obtained after 27 days of culture.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé. Nous avons étudié la précision de diagnostic des examens cliniques par arthroscopie pour les troubles internes du genou durant une période d’un an. L’étude des antécédents médicaux, un examen clinique et des radiographies ont été effectués pour 195 patients, soit 200 genoux. Un examen complémenfaire par résonance magnétique a été effectué pour 50 cas. Un diagnostic correct a été obtenu pour 104 genoux (52%), un diagnostic incomplet pour 70 genoux (35%) et un diagnostic incorrect pour 26 genoux (13%), Lorsque le genou présentait une seule lésion, le diagnostic a été correct dans 70% des cas. Lorsque plus de trois lésions etaient découvertes, le diagnostic n’a été correct que dans 28% des cas, mais toutes les lésions individuelles ont pu étre diagnostiquées avec une précision de plus de 90%. Les lésíons les plus difficiles á diagnostiquer ont été la fracture chondrale, la déchirure partielle du ligament crosé antérieur et les corps libres. Les genoux présentant des lésions aigues et ceux à diagnostic unique se sont révélés sensiblement plus faciles à diagnostiquer (p 〈0.01). L’age, le sexe, le MRI et le médecin n’ont eu aucune incidence.
    Notes: Summary. The diagnostic accuracy of clinical examination for internal derangement of the knee were evaluated by arthroscopy in 195 patients (200 knees). Radiographs were available and 50 patients had magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical diagnosis was correct in 104 knees (52%), incomplete in 70 (35%) and incorrect in 26 (13%). When there was a single abnormality the diagnosis was correct in 70%, but when more than 3 lesions were discovered the figure was 28%. All individual lesions were diagnosed correctly in more than 90%. The lesions most difficult to diagnose were chondral fractures, partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament and loose bodies. Knees with acute lesions and those with a single diagnosis were significantly easier to diagnose (p 〈0.01). Age, sex, MRI and the surgeon were not significant.

    Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate neural and muscular features of the colonic wall in patients with severe idiopathic constipation. METHODS: By using quantitative immunohistochemistry, resected specimens from 14 patients with idiopathic chronic constipation and 17 nonobstructed cancer controls were studied. RESULTS: Routine histology revealed no significant histologic abnormality throughout the colon apart from four cases of melanosis coli. Ratio of the thickness of circular to longitudinal muscle was significantly lower in the left colon in constipated subjects. The myenteric plexus appeared morphologically normal in all subjects. S-100 protein, which stains neuronal supporting tissues, demonstrated an increase in the proportion of neural tissue in the myenteric plexus. There was an increased number of PGP-9.5 immunoreactive nerve fibers in the muscularis propria in constipated patients, and this was significantly higher in the ascending and descending colon. CONCLUSION: Intractably constipated patients have alterations in the neural composition of the colonic myenteric plexus and innervation of the circular muscle.
