Notes: Summary There is a statistically strong correlation between the increase of the histamine concentration in the arterial plasma and the increase of airway resistance. The histamine causes a reflex bronchoconstriction on the sensory receptors. Histamine in low concentration increases the unspecific reaction in the bronchial system. This can also be achieved using low concentrations of allergen aerosols. Patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis show high concentrations of histamine in the sputum. The bronchoconstrictive potency of this histamine was found to be not always active. Higher concentrations of histamine can be liberated by washing the inner surface of the bronchial tree. Histamine injected in similar concentrations as that measured in the sputum causes bronchoconstriction. There should be high concentrations of histamine receptors as well as mast cells near the surface of the mucosa of the bronchial wall. There are many questions remaining open, which will be discussed.

Notes: Abstract  This paper deals with the integration of different types of standardised and available fieldbus and sensor/actuator bus systems into control systems and applications. The concept for integration and the first steps of realisation considering the bus systems PROFIBUS, CAN and INTERBUS are presented here. This includes a simple but unified application programming interface (API) on all underlying interfaces including standardised fieldbus systems and other improvements for the adaptation to different fieldbus systems. A main feature of these improvements is that there is no recompilation necessary in case of exchanging field bus systems, making the integration of different fieldbus systems much easier. The remaining work for the system integrator is to modify a few configuration tables which are written in ASCII text and easy to handle. The presented concept is realised using VME bus systems with Motorola CPU board, real time operating system OS-9 and hard- and software modules for the interfaces to PROFIBUS, CAN and INTERBUS.

Notes: Analysis of X-ray diffraction data from a polycrystalline and well oriented fiber of the sodium salt of poly(dA)·poly(dT) shows that this B′-DNA corresponds to a right-handed antiparallel tenfold double-helix of pitch 32.4 Å, with C2′-endo furanose rings in both strands. The helix contrasts itself from B-DNA in terms of a very narrow minor groove. Difference electron-density maps have revealed that a continuous spine of water molecules, two per base pair, propagates along this groove with the same symmetry as the DNA and establishes new links between the two strands. In addition to this hydrated DNA helix, the monoclinic unit cell (space group P21) accommodates about 20 sodium ions and 12 water molecules in the vicinity of phosphate groups. These structured guest molecules provide an intricate network of bridges, ranging in size from a single sodium ion to a multiple sodium–water–water–sodium unit, connecting phosphate groups belonging to adjacent DNA helices. The crystallographic R value for this structure is 0.23 for a total of 102 reflections extending out to 3.2 Å resolution.

Notes: Epitaxial [Co/Cu]10 grown on Si (001) has been irradiated by 1 MeV C+ with a dose of 1×1016/cm2. The intrinsic characteristics of epitaxy, such as crystal structure and fourfold magnetic anisotropy, are conserved after ion irradiation. However, the extrinsic magnetic properties are changed such that the coercivity decreases and the squareness of the hysteresis loop is noticeably improved. The intensity of the Cu (200) peak in the x-ray diffraction pattern increases about three times and its half-width decreases after irradiation. It is concluded that the changes of magnetic properties induced by ion irradiation result from the grain growth and the improved crystalline quality. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background There have been very few reports of occupationai allergies caused by inhalation of buckwheat flour. In this paper, we present a case of occupational asthma and rhinitis caused by buckwheat flour inhalation. Methods and results The patient had strong positive responses to grass and ragweed poiiens as well. The bronchoprovocation test showed early asthmatic response to buckwheat flour extracts. Serum specific IgE antibody to buckwheat flour was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In order to further identify the allergenic component of the extracts, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electroblotting studies were performed. Eight IgE binding components (9–55 kDa) were detected within the buckwheat flour extracts. Conclusion These results suggest that inhalation of buckwheat flour can caused IgE mediated bronchoconstriction.

Notes: An episode of fever, cough, shortness of breath and leucocytosis developed in a 31-year-old atopic housewife from mould exposure in her home environment is evaluated. A chest radiograph revealed diffuse tiny nodular infiltrations in both whole lung fields. Spirometry revealed a severe restrictive type of ventilation impairment. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) showed an increased lymphocyte count with reversed CD4 +/CD8 + ratio and transbronchial lung biopsy showed markedly increased lymphocytic infiltration in alveolar septa. Fungal cultures in the air of her home were positive for Penicillium expansum and other fungi. Double immunodiffusion test with the patient's serum showed two precipitin bands to P. expansum antigens. Her symptoms, abnormal findings of radiograph, and spirometric abnormalities disappeared after 2 months' avoidance. The serum precipitin disappeared after 1 month's avoidance. This study indicates that the patient had hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) on exposure to P. expansum in her home environment.

Notes: We studied RAST and RAST inhibition tests to black GR, the most frequent sensitizer among several reactive dyes in our previous study, in order to evaluate the specificity of IgE antibodies to hapten or new antigenic determinants and the crossreactivity between two reactive dyes, black GR and orange 3R, in sera from four different sensitized workers. RAST inhibition studies with black GR-human serum albumin (HSA) conjugate discs demonstrated that black GR-HSA conjugates were the most effective inhibitors. Orange 3R-HSA conjugates, unconjugated forms of black GR and orange 3R were weak inhibitors in two patients and non-inhibitory in one patient, whereas they caused strong dose-dependent inhibitions in one patient. These results suggested that the IgE response to black GR-HSA conjugates might be heterogenous and the cross-reactivity between two reactive dyes differed from one patient to another.
