Notes: The surE protein from Thermotoga maritima is a 247-residue protein of unknown function. Its homologues are well conserved among both the eubacteria and the archaea. It has been overexpressed in soluble form in Escherichia coli. The protein has been crystallized at 296 K using 2-propanol as a precipitant. X-ray diffraction data have been collected to 1.9 Å resolution using synchrotron radiation. The crystals belong to the trigonal space group P3121 (or P3221), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 115.96, c = 78.60 Å, α = β = 90, γ = 120°. The asymmetric unit contains two monomers of the surE protein, with a corresponding VM of 2.72 Å3 Da−1 and a solvent content of 54.7%.

Notes: Abstract Nineteen patients with nervous system metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were evaluated retrospectively. Nervous system metastasis was frequently initial presentation of HCC (seven out of 19 patients). Seven patients had metastases of the brain, of whom four had a stroke-like presentation. CT or MRI in these patients showed intracerebral hematomas in watershed areas. Enhancing lesion or edema adjacent to the hematoma helped differentiate these lesions from classical hypertensive hematomas. One patient with metastasis to the clivus presented with isolated six nerve palsy. The remaining 11 patients had spinal epidural metastases producing myelopathy in seven and radiculopathy in four. Radiation therapy failed to control the clinical course.

Notes: To evaluate the compatibilizing effects of isocyanate (NCO) functional group on the polyethylene terephthalate/low density polyethylene (PET/LDPE) blends, LDPE grafted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-isophorone diisocyanate (LDPE-g-HI) was prepared and blended with PET. The chemical reaction occurred during the melt blending in the PET/LDPE-g-HI blends was confirmed by the result of IR spectra. In the light of the blend morphology, the dispersions of the PET/LDPE-g-HI blends were very fine over the PET/LDPE blends. DSC thermograms indicated that PET microdispersions produced by the slow cooling of the PET/LDPE-g-HI blends were largely amorphous, with low crystallinity, due to the chemical bonding. The tensile strengths of the PET/LDPE-g-HI blends were higher than those of the PET/LDPE blends having a poor adhesion. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 447-453, 1998
