    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Regeneration of different stocks of Blepharisma representing several species is retarded to different degrees by identical doses of UV radiation (2654 Å). UV susceptibility of regeneration is greater in some small-sized stocks than in some large-sized stocks and in stocks with a lesser amount of pigment than in the more deeply pigmented ones. For the same dose regeneration is retarded more by low-intensity than by high-intensity short wavelength UV radiation. The UV action spectrum for regeneration delay in the Rao A stock, determined with UV of similar intensity at various short UV wavelengths, resembles absorption by nucleoprotein more than ahsorption by other cell constituents. Post-regeneration division is also retarded by UV, and the aotion spectrum for division delay resembles that for regeneration delay, except that 2801 A is relatively more effective in retarding division than regeneration. Possible explanations for the results are considered.

    Notes: Data from thirty-three experiments conducted at three ADAS Experimental Husbandry Farms were used to compare unwilted non-additive-treated silage with silage treated with formic acid, a formalin and formic-acid mixture, a calcium-formate and sodium-nitrite mixture, a formalin and sulphuric-acid mixture and wilted silage made without or with formic acid or a formalin and formic-acid mixture.Formic acid significantly reduced pH and wilting significantly increased silage pH compared with other treatments. Formalin-acid mixtures significantly reduced pH compared with untreated silage. Formic acid in conjunction with formalin or wilting significantly increased water-soluble carbohydrate in silage compared with other treatments except wilting. Formic acid either alone or combined with either formalin or wilting significantly reduced silage butyric acid content compared with other treatments. Formic acid treatment either alone or combined with formalin significantly increased lactic acid as a proportion of total silage acids compared with other treatments except sulphuric acid-formalin.All treatments significantly increased silage dry matter (DM) intake compared with untreated silage and intakes of wilted silage were significantly greater than of unwilted silage. Daily liveweight gains on all treatments were significantly higher than on untreated silage.Herbage water-soluble carbohydrate necessary for successful preservation as silage without additive use was approximately 30 g (kg DM)−1 and with additives containing formic acid it was approximately 25 g (kg DM)−1.It is suggested that formic acid application to unwilted silage either alone or in conjuction with formalin was the best treatment for improving subsequent preservation as silage, and that animal performance was enhanced by addition of acid-formalin additives to unwilted herbage or formic-acid application to unwilted or wilted herbage.

    Notes: Data from twenty-two comparisons carried out at ADAS Experimental Husbandary Farms are used to compare untreated and formic acid-treated silages. Additive treatment led to an improved fermentation in some crops, particularly those of low DM concentration (〈262 g kg-1). Where this occurred there were associated benefits in silage digestibility (+0·234 units), intake (+16%) and the growth rate of young cattle (+0·28 kg d-1). Where the fermentation of the untreated silage was good, both digestibility and animal performance associated with treated and untreated silages were similar. It is suggested that the justification for using formic acid in a commercial situation is thus restricted to occasions where the untreated crop would be liable to develop a clostridial fermentation. These may be when crops contain less than 35 g water-soluble carbohydrate kg-1.

    Notes: Summary The tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO syndrome) involves morphologic abnormalities of hair, teeth, and skeleton. Clinical findings of the TDO syndrome are excessively curly (fuzzy) hair, enamel hypoplasia, and skeletal findings of a generalized pattern of osseous sclerosis. We report an autosomal dominant syndrome with similar hair and teeth morphology, but with a skeletal dysplasia consisting of sclerosis and thickening of the calvarium with long bones that show subtle undertubulation but no sclerosis.

    Notes: The diffusion coefficient of oxygen in poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) has been explicitly measured using an optical technique based on fluorescence quenching. This measurement represents the first explicit determination of DO2 in PHEMA. A diffusion coefficient of oxygen in PHEMA of 1.36 × 10-7 cm2/s at 20°C was obtained from this measurement. This value is shown to agree well with permeability data for PHEMA, the free volume theory of diffusion, and with values of DO2 that have been explicitly measured in other methacrylate hydrogels.

    Notes: Determination of glucose concentrations in fluids frequently requires the application of immobilized glucose oxidase. An accurate description of the immobilized enzyme kinetics is critical for such applications. In this study, the overall rate of reaction of immobilized glucose oxidase is investigated theoretically. A novel steady-state model based on a ping-pong kinetic mechanism for glucose oxidase is developed. Numerical studies are used to examine the parameter sensitivity of this model. The enzyme loading, matrix thickness and geometric con figuration are found to have a significant influence on substrate uptake by insolubilized glucose oxidase.Aditionally, this new model is compared with a previously developed model based on an alternative ping-pong kinetic mechanism. Under steady-state conditions, no significant difference between the two models is apparent when appropriate kinetic parameters are applied to each of the models. The model developed herein is also compared with models utilizing the simplifying assumption of Michaelis-Mented kinetics for substrate reaction. Numerical studies indicate that under most realizable biological conditions, a model based on ping-pong kinetics should be applied to accurately describe substrate uptake by immobilized glucose oxidase.
