    Notes: Abstract The spatial and temporal expression of three closely related members of the connexin family of gap junction proteins (connexin42, Cx42; connexin43, Cx43; and connexin45, Cx45) was evaluated during bone formation in the mandibular process of the chick embryo. Mandibles of chick embryos from Hamburger and Hamilton stage 25 (approximately 5 days) through 19 days of development were dissected, serially sectioned and processed for immunocytochemical localization, employing site-specific anti-connexin antibodies. Our data revealed that (1) Cx43 was present throughout mandibular bone formation; (2) although it appeared to be associated with all bone cell types, Cx43 was concentrated in mesenchymal cells during the earliest stages in the osteogenic lineage; (3) most importantly, the localization of Cx43 at sites of bone formation appeared to precede the overt expression of the osteogenic phenotype; (4) by contrast, Cx45 was more restricted, spatially and temporally, in its distribution; (5) Cx42 expression was not detected in osteogenic tissue during mandibular bone formation. From all of the data obtained, Cx45 appeared to be associated with stages of bone formation characterized by the elaboration of matrix and the progressive expression of the differentiated osteogenic phenotype. Cx43 appeared to be associated with condensation of mesenchyme and the earliest stages of osteogenesis. Because of these associations, we propose that connexin expression may be necessary for the initiation of bone formation and the full expression of the osteogenic phenotype.

    Notes: Abstract Open hepatic and renal biopsies were performed in 15 healthy pygmy pigs by each of 15 different commonly used needles/automated biopsy devices (guns). These biopsies were performed by three radiologists, each with widely varying prior experience in the use of each device. These 15 biopsy needles/biopsy guns were divided into six categories and compared in a multivariate model to assess differences in radiologist performance based upon their prior experience. The performance of individual radiologists varied the most with the group of aspiration needles. Even an experienced radiologist who had previously performed 55 such biopsies performed statistically worse than another radiologist who had performed in excess of 200. The biopsy guns, as a group, also demonstrated significant variability between radiologists and their experience level. However, when considered alone, experience appeared less a factor with the Bard 18-gauge (1.20 mm) long-throw biopsy gun. Considerable experience-related variability was also encountered in the liver with the Vim Silverman needle and in the kidney with the vacuum needles. The 14 gauge (2.00 mm) Tru-Cut needle provided a high-quality specimen seemingly independent of operator experience. Regardless of the needle or device used, prior experience in their use appears most important in biopsies of softer, less fibrous, and more vascular tissue.

    Notes: Summary Comparative studies of the blink reflex in a series of head injuries through the stages of coma and recovery from coma in a series of miscellaneous hemispheral lesions, and in a normal series, reveals that, although the principal centre for the R1 component of the blink reflex seems to be localised in the upper pons, the seat of the R2 late component is in the reticular system. The reappearance of this late component of the blink reflex in our cases of coma although seeming to depend on the integrity of the mesencephalic formation, correlates with the recovery of the patient's alertness. On the other hand, habituation of this reflex depends on the integrity of global cognitive function, rather than on any localised centre. The roles of the cortex, selective attention, and emotional factors, are discussed. The recovery of the normal habituation of the blink reflex obtained by glabellar tapping was found to be a useful sign in the follow up of patients recovering from concussion and other lesions, such as subdural haematomas and brain tumours, with global mental impairment.

    Notes: Summary Serial memory testings of 108 head injury cases were studied over a two year follow up period. The length of the post-traumatic disorientation period (PTD) was found to be an important factor in the rate of memory recovery. In the first year after injury marked differences were seen in the recovery rates of all four PTD groups, the three short PTD groups (less than one month) finally yielding from 74% to 92% cases (according to the group) with normal memory function, while the long PTD group (more than one month) only produced 45% cases (statistical significance 0.05). During the second year and up to the end of this survey relatively little change in memory status occurred in any of the cases, regardless of their PTD. Any improvement that did occur was at an extremely slow rate. Brain damage was the main cause of memory defect in the long PTD group, while anxiety symptoms had a more important role in the short PTD cases. The shapes of memory recall curves were analysed in recovering patients. Three types of curve were found. The incidence of the shape of the curve also varied according to the PTD time (statistical significance 0.05) between long and short PTD groups. Curve shapes are discussed in terms of memory mechanisms, and a possible prognostic value is suggested. Analysis of test errors indicated not only a defective transfer of material from short term long term memory storage but also in some cases, a more complex mechanism involving inappropriate fixation of attention. Reverberation of memory traces is suggested as being a possible cause of interference in both short and long term memory mechanisms. A marked difference in recall performance between auditory and visual presentation of word lists was found to be a useful lateralising sign.

    Notes: We introduce a potential model for MgCO3 and CdCO3 which reproduces experimental structural parameters and solution energies. We employed atomistic simulation techniques to model the absorption and segregation of magnesium and cadmium ions to the low-index surfaces of calcite. Both magnesium and cadmium ions absorb at the surfaces from solution. The absorption energies are surface dependent, due to distinct relaxations of the different surfaces, and ion dependent with the smaller sized magnesium ion showing larger relaxations. The absorption energies are larger for magnesium than for cadmium, mainly due to the closer coordination of the water molecules to the magnesium substituted surfaces. The cadmium ions segregate to the bulk crystal more easily than the magnesium ions which prefer to remain at the surface. However, segregation energies for both cations in second and further layers of some surfaces are positive, indicating that once a calcium carbonate layer has overgrown the substituted surface layer, segregation to the bulk is energetically possible. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
