Notes: Two previously identified Bacillus subtilis DNA segments, dciA and dciB, whose transcripts accumulate very rapidly after induction of sporulation, were found in the same 6.2 kb transcription unit, now known as the dciA operon. Analysis of the sequence of the dciA operon showed that its putative products are homologous to bacterial peptide transport systems. The product of the fifth gene, DciAE, is similar to peptide-binding proteins from Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium (DppA and OppA) and B. subtilis (OppA). A null mutation in dciAE abolished the ability of a proline auxotroph to grow in a medium containing the dipeptide Pro–Gly as sole proline source, suggesting that the dciA operon encodes a dipeptide transport system.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes two new solution algorithms for steady recirculating flows that use a penalty formulation to eliminate the pressure from the finite difference form of the governing equations. One algorithm uses successive substitution to linearize the equations, while the other employs the Newton-Raphson linearization. In both cases, the equations are solved in a fully coupled manner using a sparse matrix form of LU decomposition. The D'Yakonov iteration is used to avoid unnecessary factorizations of the coefficient matrix, significantly improving the computational efficiency. The Newton-Raphson linearization leads to faster convergence, but the execution times of the two methods are comparable. The algorithms converge rapidly and are robust to changes in grid size and Reynolds number. In a number of laminar two-dimensional flows, the new methods proved to be two to ten times faster than some conventional iterative methods.

Notes: Abstract Carbon fibre reinforced Al-12% Si alloy composite has been fabricated by pre-treating the fibres with K2ZrF6 followed by molten alloy infiltration and subsequent hot pressing of the preforms. The infiltration conditions were arrived at based on the measurement of tensile strength of the fibres extracted from the preforms. The fibre volume per cent of 20 was found to result in composite tensile strength of about 240 MPa as compared to tensile strength of 100 MPa for the unreinforced matrix. Characterization of the interface revealed the formation of ZrSi2 and diffusion of potassium and aluminium into the fibre. The interfacial bonding was strong as is evinced by the absence of fibre pull-out on to the fracture surface.

Notes: Abstract Digestion of nuclear DNAs of five plants, namelyCucurbita maxima (red gourd),Trichosanthes anguina (snake gourd),Cucumis sativus (cucumber),Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea) andPhaseolus vulgaris (french bean) with the restriction endonucleaseMboI yielded discrete size classes with molecular weights in the range of 0.5 to 5 kbp. TheMboI digestion pattern of Cot 0.1 DNA in french bean is comparable with that of total DNA, indicating that these bands represented highly repeated DNA sequences. Cleavage of the DNAs with varying amounts ofMboI indicated the dispersed nature of the repeat families. Southern hybridization studies using french bean highly repetitive DNA as a probe indicated more homology with repeats of pigeon pea and less homology with red gourd, snake gourd and cucumber repeats.

Notes: The governing equations for the laminar fully developed flow and heat transfer in curved tubes are solved numerically for a power-law fluid. Results for the velocity and temperature fields, the friction factor, and the Nusselt number are presented for different values of the Dean number, the Prandtl number, and the power-law index. The friction factor results are compared with available experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The goal of this research is to develop a predictive model with good absolute accuracy for blood-gas exchange devices. The proposed model, unlike existing models, is able to predict gas transfer to blood flowing outside oxygenating fibres without experimental data. The proposed model uses a finite-difference numerical technique to solve computationally two-dimensional gas exchange problems such as gas transfer to blood outside hollow fibres. The model is compared to bovine and human experimental data from the small test cells with microporous polypropylene fibres. The test cell flow rates range from 1 m litre min−1 to 5 m litre min−1 for a 72-fibre device. Shear-augmented oxygen diffusion appears to be present, although good accuracy is obtained with a nonaugmented diffusion model, particularly at lower flows. The maximum deviation of oxygen saturation predicted by a shearaugmented bovine blood model from the experimental regression line was 1·7 per cent.
