Notes: Abstract. —An approximate hybrid formulation of the elastic Kirchhoff-Helmholtz theory for numerical simulation of seismic wave propagation in multilayered inhomogeneous and transversely isotropic media is developed. The layer boundaries can be curved or irregular. We insert a general computational ansatz into the basic elastodynamic divergence theorem to express the unknown variables in terms of slowly varying amplitude and phase functions. In situations where the geometrical optics approximation becomes invalid, more accurate methods can be applied to compute these functions. In particular, the kernel remains regular when rays have caustics on the target integral surface. Branch points are taken into account to include head waves. Both elementary solutions and WKBJ expansion are employed to compute the Green’s function. To reduce the resulting integral to a numerical form, the surface is divided into a set of segments and the above functions are replaced by their local polynomial series in the vicinity of each segment. It allows us to construct an error-predictive numerical algorithm in which the truncation error is prescribed via the higher order terms of such series. We show, using geologically relevant synthetic models, the performance of the proposed technique.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the nitrogen source on the α-amylase productivity of Aspergillus oryzae was quantified in continuous cultivations. Both inorganic and complex nitrogen sources were investigated and glucose was used as the carbon and energy sources. For production of α-amylase, nitrate was shown to be inferior to ammonia as a nitrogen source. A mixture of ammonia and complex nitrogen sources, such as yeast extract or casein hydrolysate, was better than with ammonia as the sole nitrogen source. Even a low concentration of casein hydrolysate (0.05 g l−1) resulted in a 35% increase in the α-amylase productivity. The higher α-amylase productivity during growth on casein hydrolysate was not caused by increased transcription of the α-amylase genes but was caused by a faster secretion of α-amylase or by a lower binding of α-amylase to the biomass.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of contrast-medium (CM)-enhanced MR imaging of operated pituitary macroadenomas with reduced dose of gadopentetate dimeglumine. In a prospective study 18 patients were examined with coronal T1-weighted MR imaging prior to and following intravenous CM injections. Two sets of contrast-enhanced coronal images were obtained in each patient; the first set after 50 % of the recommended dose of 0.1 mmol/kg body weight (b. w.) had been administered, and the second set immediately after additional CM had been given to make up a total dose of 0.1 mmol/kg b. w. The images were evaluated by three neuroradiologists. The SIPAP classification system was used to evaluate tumour extension, whereas tumour margin conspicuity was scored using an arbitrary scale of 1–5 (1 = indistinct, 5 = well defined). Signal intensity measurements obtained from the most enhancing part of the adenomas demonstrated increased enhancement with increased CM dose. Tumour delineation scores were significantly better on the reduced- and full-dose images than on pre-CM injection images, but, with one exception, tumour extension was identified as the same on all imaging sequences. Postoperative MR imaging of large macroadenoma residues can routinely be performed without intravenous CM. When CM is indicated a reduced dose of gadopentetate dimeglumine should provide sufficient diagnostic information.

Notes: Summary Nineteen male patients with AIDS were investigated by biopsy of brain lesions. Six patients had progressive multiple leucoencephalopathy and no specific treatment was given. Toxoplasmosis (two patients), bacterial abscesses (two cases), viral encephalitis (two patients) and only gliosis (two cases) accounted for almost half of the cases. A fungal infection, a lymphoma and a sarcoma-like tumour were found in three patients. In two patients the biopsy was not diagnostic: one had only necrosis and one had normal findings. The biopsy findings gave reason for modifying the treatment in only three cases. The mean survival rate was relatively short, only 76 days with a range from 1 to 1041 days. Two patients were in a very bad clinical condition at the time of biopsy and one died of a haemorrhagic complication due to the biopsy. In ten cases an autopsy was carried out. In five cases there was agreement between the biopsy and autopsy findings. In the other five cases the autopsy findings differed widely. In our experience we can recommend cerebral biopsy in patients with AIDS only after treatment for toxoplasmosa and mainly to estimate the prognosis.

Notes: Time-dependent photodetachment spectra for small electronically and vibrationally excited negatively charged carbon clusters Cn− (n=2–6) are measured using an electrostatic ion trap. The time dependence demonstrates the presence of metastable electronic states with lifetimes in the range of 10 to 200 ms. Comparison is made with available data and theoretical calculations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
