    Notes: Ti,Eu co-doped Y2O2S:0.06Ti,0.08Eu phosphor with red long afterglow emission from Eu ionswas synthesized via traditional sintering method. Results showed that sintering temperature has greatinfluence on the crystal structure, luminescence and afterglow property of the phosphors. The best luminescenceand afterglow properties were obtained for the phosphors sintered at 1200°C for 2.5h. Furthermore,only emissions originated from charge transition of Eu3+ was found in the luminescence spectrawhereas the afterglow spectra were composed of two sets of emissions: a broad yellow emission bandaround 565nm and a group of narrow peaks in the wavelength range above 530 nm. The origin ofafterglow spectra was discussed: the former is likely related to emission from Ti related traps and thelatter is supposed to come from the Eu3+ through an energy transfer process from Ti emission to Eu3+

    Notes: Y1.97-xTi0.03CdxO2S (0≤x≤0.06) phosphors with long afterglow were synthesized by solid-statereaction. The photoluminescence spectra, decay curves, thermoluminescnece spectra and Chromaticitycoordinate curves were investigated. Results showed that the luminescence and afterglow intensity ofY1.97-xTi0.03CdxO2S (0≤x≤0.06) reduced gradually with increasing Cd2+ ion content while the shape andposition of emission peak remain unchanged. The Chromaticity coordinate of present phosphor keeps at(0.5497,0.4415). Furthermore, based on the results of thermoluminescence curves of Ti, Cd single dopedand co-doped Y2O2S phosphors, the doped Cd ion reduces the inherent trap depth of Ti single dopedY2O2S:Ti, and induces simultaneously a new trap level in Y2O2S:Ti,Cd phosphor. Thus, it was proposedthat the introduced new structure defect by Cd2+ ions should be responsible for the reducing luminescenceand afterglow property

    Notes: Background: Considerable controversy has surrounded the question of possible biological responses to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) generated from visual display terminals (VDTs), such as personal computers (PCs) and ordinary television sets (TVs). The cellular and molecular mechanisms for such potential harmful health hazards have not yet been understood, although clues from the literature include mast cells and histamine. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate possible biological mast cell responses to TV/PC screens.Methods: Using the indirect immunofluorescence technique, we studied the presence of histamine-containing mast cells in the dermis of healthy volunteers. Cutaneous biopsies taken before and after exposure to ordinary TV/PC screens for 2 or 4 h were investigated in 13 healthy subjects.Results: Our present in vivo study indicates that normal cutaneous mast cells could be altered by exposure from ordinary TV/PC screens. To our great surprise, we found the number of mast cells in the papillary and reticular dermis to increase, to varying degrees, in 5 out the 13 subjects after such an exposure. A migration of mast cells towards the uppermost dermis appeared as the most important event. Thus, the normally upper “empty zone” of the dermis disappeared, and instead, a higher density of mast cells were found in this zone. These cells also seemed to have a tendency to increase in number towards the epidermal-dermal junctional zone and some of them lost their granular content and the cytoplasm shrunk (=degranulation). These findings could only be seen in the exposed skin. Two of the 13 cases instead showed a decrease in mast cell number, but the shift in mast cells towards the upper dermis was still visible. Twenty-four h after the provocation, the cellular number and location were normalized in all subjects.Conclusions: By definition, normal healthy volunteers are assumed not to react to a TV/PC screen provocation. To our great surprise, this proved not to be true. The present results might lay a foundation to understand the underlying cause of so-called “screen dermatitis” with special reference to mast cells. However, blind or double-blind experiments using patients ought to be further investigated in order to find out the exact cause for the observed changes. Such causes include the effects of surrounding airborne chemicals, stress factors, etc.

    Notes: Abstract Pioneering studies both in humans and animals have demonstrated an association between the peripheral nervous system and epidermal melanocyte destruction. The presence of certain neuropeptides and neuronal structural markers in peripheral nerve fibres was investigated in involved and uninvolved vitiligo skin and compared with normal healthy skin. A group of 18 vitiligo vulgaris patients and matched healthy volunteers participated in the investigation. The indirect immunofluorescence technique was employed. There was a tendency for a reduction in the number and intensity of low affinity (p75) nerve growth factor receptor immunoreactive (NGFr-IR) basal keratinocytes in involved vitiliginous skin ( P 〈 0.06) compared with control skin, while the number of NGFr-IR nerve fibres was significantly increased ( P 〈 0.01). The number of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-IR nerve fibres in the epidermis and papillary dermis was dramatically increased in involved skin as compared with control skin ( P 〈 0.01) and with uninvolved skin ( P 〈 0.05). No clear difference could be found in the distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)- and neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY)-IR nerve fibres. A different structural appearance of the peripheral nervous system as well as a changed balance of neuropeptides in vitiliginous skin point to a critical role of the nervous system in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.

    Notes: We consider an initial boundary value problem for a non-linear differential system consisting of one equation of parabolic type coupled with a n × n semi-linear hyperbolic system of first order. This system of equations describes the compressible miscible displacement of n + 1 chemical species in a porous medium, in the absence of diffusion and dispersion. We assume the viscosity of the fluid mixture to be constant. We prove, in three space dimensions, the existence of a global weak solution with non-smooth initial data for the concentration.
