Notes: Abstract  This paper reports on a new single hydrothermal process for the deposition of PZT thin films on titanium substrates. The Zr/(Zr+Ti) ratio is adjusted by controlling the Ti and Zr ionic concentrations. The films are analysed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A PZT film of 5 μm thickness (Zr=0.52, Ti=0.48) very interesting from the point of view of piezoelectric constants, was successfully obtained by the control of ions concentration in the solution. The XRD patterns show well-defined peaks corresponding to a well-crystallised PZT phase with the ratio Zr/(Zr+Ti)=0.52. This composition is called the morphotropic-phase boundary (MPB), which means the separation between the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. SEM micrographs show microcrystalline thin films with homogenous thickness and distribution on the titanium substrate. The microcrystals are cubic. It is demonstrated that large vibration amplitudes can be excited with these films under low voltage supply (5 V).

Notes: Parametric wave phase conjugation of wide-band ultrasonic pulses of 100% relative bandwidth is demonstrated. The giant amplification allowed by the supercritical mode of the magnetoacoustic technique used, leads to a relatively high efficiency of the conjugation process. In addition, the pulse response function of the magnetoacoustic conjugator in supercritical mode is derived by fitting the experimental results with the linear theory of phase conjugation. The latter provides the parameters that define the maximum value of acoustic power in the conjugate wave. The results are of interest for applications in nondestructive evaluation and acoustical imaging. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Application of the supercritical magnetoelastic wave phase conjugation to harmonic imaging in acoustic C-scan microscopy is demonstrated. Second-harmonic generation by phase-conjugate wave is used for improvement of resolution of an imaging system. Possibility to compensate phase aberrations introduced in harmonic image by inhomogeneity of propagation medium is shown experimentally and explained theoretically. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Acoustic C-scan imaging (acoustic microscopy) by means of supercritical parametric wave phase conjugation (WPC) is studied experimentally. A phase conjugator based on a magneto-acoustic active material is used for compensating phase distortions introduced by solid and polymer aberration layers covering objects (electronic integrated circuits as examples). Improvement of images is demonstrated on an acoustic microscope, operating at a frequency of 10 MHz. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Strongly nonlinear resonance of the longitudinal magnetoelastic wave in a hematite single crystal has been studied experimentally. Generation of more than 40 acoustic harmonics by means of a sinusoidal rf magnetic field has been observed in periodic oscillations. Two typical kinds of bifurcations evoked by the variation of external parameters (bias magnetic-field strength, rf field frequency, and amplitude) have been found. The first one corresponds to a slow automodulation of the periodic ultrasonic excitation. The second one is accompanied by fast chaotic oscillations in the temporal domain and by generation of a few incommensurate frequencies in the ultrasonic spectrum similarly to quasiperiodic scenarios of turbulence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
