Description / Table of Contents: Summary Use of a highly sensitive electroacoustic actograph has allowed monitoring and comparison of the manifestations of poisoning in the domestic house-fly by contact insecticides from various chemical families: DDT, lindane, parathion, Dipterex®, fenthion, Baygon®, carbaryl, Mesurol®, and Temik®. The different symptoms can each be identified by its special actographic record and the successive stages of poisoning delimited distinctly. Results obtained agree with Pasquier's (1947) discrimination of five successive phases: “prodromic phase”, “typical phase”, “choreo-ataxic phase”, “clonic phase” and “paralytic phase”. Comparison of the several actograms shows that the shape of the recording and the relative importance of the various phases differ according to the chemical family of the insecticide used. These facts suggest that the symptoms of poisoning may be the expression of appreciably different modes of action, and that an even more precise knowledge of these symptoms might contribute to a better understanding of certain aspects of the mode of action of insecticides.
