    Notes: Conclusions In this paper, a new benchmark was presented to verify the finite element method programs for analysis of composite element impact problems. The benchmark presented possesses a double contact between the impactor and the laminated plate. The results of the analytical solution were presented, and compared with the results obtained by a commercially available FEM-program. This work was an example of a numerical solution method verification, and the test was found suitable as a benchmark due to its simplicity in modeling and its versatility in assessing programs.

    Notes: Abstract A theoretical and numerical formulation for nonlinear axially moving membrane is presented. The model is based on a Lagrangian description of the continuum problem in the context of dynamics of initially stressed solids. Membrane elasticity is included via a finite strain model and the membrane transport speed is included by using conservation of the membrane mass. Hamilton's principle provides nonlinear equations, which describe the three-dimensional motion of the membrane. The incremental equations of Hamilton's principle are discretized by the finite element method. The formulation includes geometrically nonlinear effects: large displacements, variation of membrane tension and variations in axial velocity due to deformation. Implementation of this novel numerical model was done by adding an axially moving membrane element into a FEM program, which contains acoustic fluid elements and contact algorithms. Hence, analysis of problems containing interaction with the surrounding air field and contact between supporting structures was possible. The model was tested by comparing previous linear and present nonlinear dynamic behaviour of an axially moving web. The effects of contact between finite rolls and the membrane and interaction between the surrounding air and the membrane were included in the model. The results show, that nonlinearities and coupling phenomena have a considerable effect on the dynamic behaviour of the system.

    Notes: In many practical applications it is desired to describe a surface enclosing a given volume which has to possess a minimum area. Moreover, there are engineering criteria, e.g. the requirement of minimum resistance, which cannot be involved in the present interpolation algorithms of the existing CAD systems. The present paper describes an approach where the surface creation task is formulated as a constrained minimization problem. The pointwise specified co-ordinates are used as boundary conditions. The volume enclosed is a constraint, and the functional under minimization is the surface area. Thus, as the viscous resistance is roughly proportional to the area of the wetted surface, the result approximates the form having minimum viscous resistance. The finite element method is employed and the elements used are C1 continuous isoparametric elements to be able to represent infinite slopes. In the light of applications studied thus far it can be said that the method converges and is thus capable of creating surfaces of minimum area enclosing a given volume.

    Notes: Transverse vibrations of an axially moving (travelling in its own plane) membrane submerged in ideal fluid are analysed using the FEM. The discrete equations differ from the equations of the common coupled problem in that there appear two additional inertia terms due to the convective acceleration. The effect of the density of the element mesh, the effect of the truncation distance and the effect of various lumping techniques on the accuracy of the results are studied. The FEM-results are compared with available analytical and experimental results. The agreement seems to be rather good.

    Notes: A refined version of the Hermitian isoparametric element which avoids the difficulties with derivative parameters in the geometric mapping is presented. The accuracy of the element is compared with the DKT-triangle, which is considered to be the most accurate 9 degrees-of-freedom plate bending element. The present element compares rather well with the DKT element. Moreover, comparisons are also made in some ‘non-standard’ cases (circular plate with concentrated load off the centre and elliptical plate) which suggest that the accuracy of all the elements considered is slightly poorer in these than in the standard cases.
