Notes: Abstract The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) differential diagnosis of intrahepatic biloma from intrahepatic subacute hematoma has been reported in two cases. The biloma was heterogenously intense on T1-weighted images and homogenously hyperintense on T2-weighted images. The hematoma was hyperintense on the both T1-and T2-weighted MR images. The clinical significance of this MRI difference is that intrahepatic biloma needs drainage, whereas intrahepatic hematoma can heal spontaneously.

Notes: The linear and quasilinear theory of the collisionless trapped electron mode (also called the "ubiquitous'' mode) is analyzed, in order to illustrate its possible role in the electron thermal energy transport observed in magnetically confined plasmas. This instability is driven by the combined effects of the plasma pressure gradient (which includes the contributions from the temperature gradients of ions and electrons) and of the local magnetic curvature drift of trapped electrons and of circulating and trapped ions. Depending on the value of its wavelength across the magnetic field, this mode can connect with a branch of the ion temperature gradient instability, provided the ion temperature gradient is sufficiently strong. Also, under certain conditions, it can be driven unstable solely by a combination of electron temperature gradient and Landau damping by trapped electrons. The relevant modes are found to be robust against variation of parameters such as the electron collisionality, and to be consistent candidates in order to explain the experimentally observed rate of electron thermal energy transport from the center of the plasma column.

Notes: Experiments have been conducted on Constance B to study transport properties in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heated plasmas of high-charge-state neon ions. Measurements were made of confinement parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field at heating frequencies of 10.5 and 14 GHz, and corresponding ECR magnetic field strengths. Although radial ion losses scaled approximately as B−2, the total particle confinement time was independent of magnetic field. Thus, higher current densities of multicharged neon ions were extracted at higher ECR heating frequency and magnetic field.

Notes: A new wideband integrated optical frequency shifter that utilizes noncollinear guided-wave magneto-optic (MO) Bragg diffraction from magnetostatic-forward-volume waves (MSFVW) in a bismuth-doped yttrium-iron-garnet/gadolinium-gallium-garnet (YIG/GGG) waveguide, 6×10 mm2 in size, is reported. Constancy in the output angle of the frequency-shifted light beam, irrespective of the amount of frequency shift, is facilitated by synchronous tuning of the carrier frequency of the MSFVW and the bias magnetic field using an electronic synchronizer. The device operating at the optical wavelength of 1.302 μm and the carrier frequency centered at X band has demonstrated desirable characteristics including large frequency shift, very large tunable bandwidth, large dynamic range, and fast tuning speed. Specifically, bandwidths of 1.61 and 2.35 GHz and dynamic ranges of 35 and 32 dB at the center carrier frequencies of 6.035 and 11.025 GHz, respectively, and a tuning speed of 50 μs have been accomplished.

Notes: Abstract Holographic particle image velocimetry (HPIV) is a three-dimensional (3D) measurement technique that was originally developed for the velocity field measurements of single-phase fluid flows. The present study aims at a further extension of the HPIV technique for multiphase flow applications. HPIV should be able to provide not only the flow velocity fields on 3D grids, but also 3D information for individual particles including their positions and velocities. In this paper, we describe the extension of an off-axis HPIV system for the measurement of 3D positions and velocities of particles. Unlike most other PIV and HPIV systems, where velocity fields are obtained from correlation techniques, this HPIV system measures velocities by matching and pairing particles and potentially preserves the individual particle information. A volume rendering algorithm called the particle reconstructed by edge detection (PRED) method is developed to identify individual 3D particle images with complicated shapes. As a starting point of the development of HPIV for diagnosing particulate flows, this technique is applied to both a simulated flow to provide accuracy analysis and a real flow to test its feasibility.

Notes: Abstract New neutron-deficient isotopes,197Rn,197mRn, and200Fr have been produced and identified on the basis of genetic correlations in the166Er(36Ar,5n)197Rn (Elab=186, 200 MeV), and169Tm(36Ar,5n)200Fr (Elab=186 MeV) reactions. The evaporation residues were separated from the beam by using a gas-filled recoil separator and implanted onto a position-sensitive solid-state detector. The α-decay energies (half-lives) of197Rn,197mRn and200Fr have been determined to be 7261±30 keV (51 −15 +35 ms), 7370±30 keV (18 −5 +9 ms), and 7500±3O keV, (570 −140 +270 ms), respectively.

Notes: Abstract The competition between fusion-fission and deeply inelastic reactions in the Cl + Ni system has been studied by investigating the exit channelQ-value dependence of theZ-distributions of fission-like fragments. TheZ-, kinetic energy- and angular distributions of the fission-like fragments produced in the37Cl +64Ni system atE lab=170, 186 MeV and in the28Si +74Ge system atE lab=176 MeV have been measured by counter telescopes. TheZ-distribution of the37Cl +64Ni system was found to be essentially the same as that of the35Cl +62Ni system at the same bombarding energy. It is shown that this result can not be explained by the statistical fusion fission model but is consistent with a deeply inelastic model. A systematic study of the fission-like phenomenon in this mass region indicates that the maximum angular momenta for fusion reactions as well as the minimum angular momenta for DIC can be reproduced by the Bass model in the sliding limit (f=1.0) while the maximum angular momenta for fully energy-damped deeply inelastic reactions are governed by the strong interaction radius as predicted by the successive critical distance fusion model. The significance of these results are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The characteristic circular dichroism of bilirubin bound to human serum albumin undergoes a remarkable sign inversion on addition of halothane, chloroform and other volatile anesthetics. This sign inversion, which is completely reversed by removal of the anesthetic, reflects a pronounced conformational change of the bound ligand; probably a complete inversion of chirality. The observation suggests that association of volatile anesthetics with proteins can markedly alter the internal topography of receptor sites and potentially influence the stereoselectivity of ligand binding.
