Notes: Abstract. Quinn MA, Rome RM, Grant P, Planner RS. High-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate in advanced ovarian cancer, int J Gynecol Cancer 1991; 1: 239-241.Seventeen patients with advanced ovarian malignancy were treated with high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate. No objective responses were achieved. Four patients had stable disease, one of whom remains alive with disease at 30+ months.

Notes: Intrauterine fetal death occurred in two pregnancies following the extra-amniotic insertion of prostaglandin gel to ripen the cervix. An antenatal cardiotocogram before gel insertion was normal in each case. Continuous external cardiotocography should be used in patients with a high risk pregnancy who undergo ripening of the cervix before induction of labour.

Notes: The findings in a patient who was found to have a sclerosing stromal tumour of the ovary associated with a tubal pregnancy are described. Measurement of hormones in blood before and after removal of the tumour suggested the tumour was andro-gen-secreting.

Notes: Laparoscopy with cytology of ascitic fluid or peritoneal washings was performed on 110 occasions in 62 patients with ovarian cancer to assess response to chemotherapy. Damage to bowel occurred on three occasions and complete visualisation of the peritoneal cavity was not possible in 14 patients. When tumour was seen and/or cytology was positive, the prognosis was poor; absence of macroscopic tumour with negative cytology did not preclude continuing disease. A group of patients was identified in whom a change of therapy based on laparoscopic findings after six months of treatment, might have proven beneficial. Laparoscopy has a limited place as a second-look procedure in patients undergoing treatment for carcinoma of the ovary.

Notes: Summary. A retrospective comparison was undertaken of 552 cases in which Kielland's forceps were used for rotation and delivery, 95 cases in which other forceps were used for rotation and delivery, and 160 cases in which manual rotation and forceps were used. There was no significant difference in maternal or fetal morbidity between the three groups, regardless of whether the indication for delivery was delay in the second stage of labour or fetal distress. When Kielland's forceps were used by junior staff, significantly more vaginal and cervical lacerations and primary postpartum haemorrhage occurred, but there was no increase in fetal morbidity.

Notes: Summary. The incidence and levels of cytoplasmic steroid receptors were studied in 155 endometrial carcinomas: oestrogen receptors (ER) were measured in all samples, progesterone receptors (PR) in 148 and androgen receptors (AR) in 118. Well-differentiated adenocarcinomas were significantly more likely to contain ER, PR and AR than were poorly-differentiated tumours, and mean values of ER and PR content were significantly higher in well-differentiated adenocarcinomas than in less-differentiated tumours. Receptor profiles in adenosquamous carcinomas and clear-cell carcinomas were similar to those in adenocarcinomas. Deeply invasive tumours were significantly less likely to be ER, PR or AR positive and, even when positive, such tumours had significantly lower mean levels of ER and PR. Poorly-differentiated tumours were significantly more likely to be ER-negative PR-positive than well-differentiated adenocarcinomas and adenosquamous carcinomas.

Notes: Forty nulliparous patients with a Bishop score of 3 or less were given 15 mg oestriol gel, 10 mg PGF2α gel or gel alone via the extra-amniotic route. Both the oestriol and prostaglandin treated patients had a significant increase in Bishop score and a significant reduction in induction-delivery interval compared to con-trols. Oestriol gel had significantly less stimulatory effect on uterine activity than prostaglandin gel, indicating a possible local action.

Notes: Summary. Cytoplasmic oestrogen receptors were measured in 40 primary and four secondary ovarian tumours; of these, 43 tumours were also analysed for cytoplasmic progesterone receptors and 34 tumours for cytoplasmic androgen receptors. Serous tumours were significantly more likely to be oestrogen-receptor positive than mucinous tumours, but the incidence of positive progesterone and androgen receptors was similar in serous, mucinous and endometrioid tumours. The mean oestrogen receptor content of serous tumours was significantly higher than that of endometrioid tumours. Well-differentiated epithelial tumours were significantly more likely to be oestrogen-receptor and progesterone-receptor positive than less differentiated epithelial tumours. Two granulosa cell tumours were oestrogen-receptor positive and one of these was also progesteronereceptor and androgen-receptor positive. Four normal óvaries were also analysed for receptor content and two were found to be androgen-receptor positive. The presence of cytoplasmic receptors in ovarian tumours may explain their reported response to endocrine therapy.

Notes: Abstract The predation on egg populations ofSitona hispidus (Fabricius) [Col.: Curculionidae] in a stand of alfalfa was evaluated in 1982 and 1983. By using pitfall traps, catches of reproductive adults ofS. hispidulus were correlated with catches of carabid species, and potential egg predators were identified for further evaluation. Results indicated that predators removed 28 % of eggs under field conditions.Amara aenea DeGeer was found to be particularly efficient on eggs ofS. hispidulus under caged-field conditions.
