Notes: Abstract In this study the differentiation of postnatal muscle fibres in dog semitendinosus muscle has been characterized. Several histochemical techniques for myosin ATPase and metabolic activity were used in animals aged between 1 day and 2 months. The results show that at birth there are two types of fibre, whose ATPase activity gradually changes during postnatal development, so that several types of fibre can be identified after 2 months. These finally become the four types of the adult: I, IIA, IIDog, IIC. The main conclusions of the study are that the use of mATPase techniques is appropriate for showing the differentiation between muscle fibres, even at early stages of postnatal development, and that the origin of the four different fibres of the adult can be traced back to early postnatal stages.

Notes: Abstract. Sarcoidosis of the gastrointestinal tract is uncommon even though involvement of the liver, spleen, and adenopathy are becoming recognizable entities on computed tomography (CT). Involvement of the stomach, the most common site of sarcoidosis of the gastrointestinal tract, is usually associated with pulmonary disease. The radiologic appearances of gastric involvement are variable. Positive biopsies may be obtained in a radiologically normal stomach. Ulceration resembling peptic ulcer disease may occur, and mucosal enlargement may be minor, diffusely nodular, or significant enough to mimic Menetrier disease. In its most dramatic form, a linitis plastica appearance resembling scirrhous carcinoma has been reported.

Notes: Summary Ethidium was found to be taken up by yeast cells in a process that, at certain concentrations has the main following characteristics: a) a substrate is required; b) it presents cooperative kinetics, withn, according to the Hill equation ≈3; c) ethidium can be concentrated more than 100-fold; d) the uptake is inhibited by Ca2+; e) the uptake of the dye is inhibited by monovalent cations with a selectivity pattern similar to that observed in their transport by yeast; f) ethidium inhibits the uptake of K+, and, at concentrations up to about 250 μm produces a competitive inhibition on the uptake of Rb+; and g) ethidium produces the same effects as K+ on respiration and the extrusion of H+. It is concluded that ethidium is taken up by yeast cells in a selective way by the same transport system normally employed for monovalent cation uptake.

Notes: The fracture toughness of the Fe2B phase was evaluated in this study. Formation of theFe2B boride is carried out though paste boriding process applied on AISI 1045 steel surface. Thetreatment was carried out at temperatures of 1193, 1223 and 1273 K for 6 h using a 5 mm thickboron paste. A Vickers microhardness tester was used to generate microcracks at a load of 200g.The indentations were made across the thickness of the iron boride layer at four different distancesfrom the substrate. The experimental results show that the critical stress intensity factor KIC for theFe2B phase shows a potential law dependence on crack length; this contradicts the concepts ofLinear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, which establish that the fracture toughness value is a constant ofthe material

Notes: In this study, the evaluation of interfaces on iron boride Fe2B growth obtained by pasteboriding process was carried out. Fractal geometry is used like a powerful tool for the roughnessanalysis present during iron boride growth. Experiments were performed in AISI 1045 steel attemperatures of 1193K for exposure times of 2, 4 and 6 h, and 1223K for treatment times of 2, 4, 5and 6 h, varying the boron paste thicknesses in the range of 1 – 5 mm for each temperature andtime. The fronts of the interfaces in iron boride coatings were characterized and digitized with meanof an optic microscope and Scion Image software. Self-affine methods were applied to the interfacegrowths for validate the fractality of the system. It was established that the interface width, ω ,scales to ω (L) ∼ L H , where H represents the roughness exponent of the boride layers

Notes: A new algorithm for the calculation of molecular integrals involving STOs is reported. The algorithm enables us to obtain every two-center one-electron integral and the long-range many-center one- and two-electron integrals. The efficient implementation of the algorithm is discussed and its performance is thoroughly tested. The analysis on the stability of the relations employed in the calculation of multipolar moments is included. Futhermore, the computer time required to carry out each step (construction of basic matrices, calculation of multipolar moments, and calculation of two-electron integrals) has also been analyzed. The range of validity of this approach is shown in several molecular integrals.

Notes: A method for the calculation of many-center integrals involving Slater-type orbitals (STOs) is reported. The method is based on the separation of the short- and long-range terms of the potentials generated by charge distributions. The calculation of three-center nuclear attraction integrals and many-center electron repulsion integrals, when the short-range contributions are negligible, is formulated in terms of multipolar moments of charge distributions. Recurrence relations for obtaining the multipolar moments, which enable us to reduce their calculations to the evaluation of some basic integrals, are reported.

Notes: In a recently reported method, the molecular density is partitioned in minimally deformed atomic contributions, which are expanded in spherical harmonics times radial factors. Here we use this representation to express the electrostatic potential of the molecule, the force on its nuclei, and the conformational variations of energy in terms of some simple integrals of the atomic radial factors. As a first application, we analyze the relationship between the density and the binding forces (and the bonding energy) in the diatomic molecules of the first row atoms. Two types of forces act on each nucleus: the self-pulling exerted by its own cloud and the external force due to the remaining atoms. The self-pulling comes only from the dipole type term of the atomic density. The external force comes from the other clouds and nuclei and is dominated by the effective charges which depend on the outermost region of the charge term. Analyzing the progressive deformations of the atoms when they approach each other, the forces associated with these deformations and their contributions to the energy, one has a detailed description of the chemical bond which is complementary, and in many aspects more appealing, than the conventional ones. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Multiple malignant melanocytic lesions developed in a 54-year-old man 4 years after a primary malignant melanoma (Clark level IV) had been excised and 2 months after taking L-Dopa for Parkinsonism. Several of the recurrent lesions that showed junctional melanocytic components were considered primary melanomas and it was suggested that L-Dopa was responsible for malignant transformation of nevi and for rapid progression of the disease. The case was re-examined and on recent evidence it is likely that these lesions were epidermotropic metastases and that L-Dopa played no part in the progress of this unusual tumor.
