    Notes: Abstract : To study the effects of creatine (Cr) on brain energy metabolism and on hypoxia-induced seizures, 5-to 30-day-old rabbit pups were given subcutaneous Cr (3 g/kg) for 3 days before exposure to 4% O2 for 8 min. In saline-treated controls, hypoxic seizures were most frequent at 15 days (80% of pups) and 20 days (60%) of age. Seizures were prevented at 15 days and reduced 60% at 20 days in Cr-treated pups. In surface coil-localized brain 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, with signal from both cerebral gray (GM) and white (WM) matter, the phosphocreatine (PCr)/nucleoside triphosphate (NTP) ratio doubled between 5 and 30 days of age in controls. In all Cr-injected pups, brain PCr/NTP increased to values seen in 30-day-old controls. When spectra were acquired in predominantly GM and WM slices in vivo, the PCr/NTP ratio was very low in GM at 5 days but reached adult levels by 15 days in controls. In WM, the ratio increased steadily from 5 to 30 days of age. In Cr-injected pups, PCr/NTP increased to mature levels in WM and in GM at all ages. In conclusion, hypoxic seizures occur midway in the time course of brain PCr/NTP increase in rabbit pups as previously described in rat pups. In both altricial pups, systemic Cr increases brain PCr/NTP ratio and prevents hypoxic seizures. These results suggest that mature levels of PCr and/or Cr in brain limit EEG activation either directly or indirectly by preventing hypoxic metabolic changes.

    Notes: Saddle-shaped skin lesions commonly occurring in both wild and captive Bermudan reef silversides yielded a mixed infection of motile and non-motile Gram-negative cells of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas sp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and a myxobacterial-like strain. Bacteria occurred as almost pure microcolonies and mixed clumps on proximal scale and fin ray surfaces, in intercellular epidermal spaces, on perimysium of fin erector muscle myomeres and on eroded dorsal fin rays and their intact membranes, but neither on healthy areas of the skin nor within muscle cells. Effects were epithelial destruction and liquefactive necrosis of myomeres, and raising and sloughing of Malpighian cells, scales and dermis. Host response was minimal, consisting of infiltration of a few lymphocytes and macrophages. The fish pathogenic dinoflagellate Amyloodinium ocellatum was seen in one fish with a saddle lesion and caused muscle cell lysis, as evidenced by cloudy cell swelling. Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed increased drug resistance with mixed bacterial types compared to that of single pure isolates. This suggests that alternatives to chemotherapy for control of bacterial fish diseases is appropriate, because most are probably caused by mixed infections.

    Notes: Abstract Our purpose was to establish parameters for normal infratentorial brain maturation at 0.5 and 1.5T and to evaluate the field strength criteria for the assessment of infratentorial brain maturation with MRI. We examined 27 children with normal psychomotor development (3 days to 24 months) with a 1.5T system and 22 (4 days to 29 months) with a 0.5T system; standard T2-weighted spin-echo sequences (TR/TE 2500/90 ms at 1.5T and TR/TE 2200/90 ms at 0.5T) were obtained. The signal intensity of infratentorial anatomical structures compared to their surroundings was classified as high, isointense or low by three neuroradiologists. For anatomical structures with age-related contrast changes, the time of these changes was determined statistically for the 0.5T and 1.5T system independently. The delineation of the structures without age-related contrast changes at the two field strengths was compared using a χ2 test. Age-related contrast changed were found in the same anatomical structures (“marker sites”) at 0.5 and 1.5T. Generally, these changes were apparent in larger structures (pons, middle cerebellar peduncles, medulla, cerebellar folia, red nuclei, cerebral peduncles), with only slight field-strength-dependent differences in the time of the contrast changes. Contrast changes from high to isointense signal were observed slightly earlier at 0.5T and changes from isointense to low signal slightly later at 0.5T. The delineation of the smaller anatomical structures was significantly better at 1.5T but these structures did not show age-related contrast changes. The differences in the assessment of infratentorial brain maturation between 0.5 and 1.5T can be attributed to a lower signal-to-noise ratio at lower magnetic field strengths. These differences do not complicate temporal classification of the stage of infratentorial brain maturation using the same “marker sites” and the same temporal criteria at 0.5 or 1.5T. However, higher field strengths are preferable for the assessment of smaller structures with physiological signal differences; this may imply better detection of small lesions at higher field strengths.

    Notes: Abstract MRI is a sensitive tool for the investigation of pituitary microadenomas but cannot be used as a screening investigation. To establish a strategy for the use of MRI in patients with hyperprolactaemia we investigated 74 women with serum prolactin levels above 52 ng/ml for the presence of microadenomas. We examined 55 premenopausal and 19 postmenopausal women, using a 1.5 T unit. We used T 1-weighted spin-echo sequences, with coronal and sagittal images before and after intravenous gadolinium. We found microadenomas in 38 patients (51.3 %), macroadenomas in 6 (8.1 %) and an infundibular glioma in 1; 29 patients had a normal pituitary gland (39.2 %). The size of the adenomas was related to the prolactin level, and the mean level in patients with MRI evidence of adenomas was higher than in patients without microadenomas (155.72 ± 131.01 ng/ml versus 110.14 ± 80.86 ng/ml). The probability of the presence of an adenoma increased with rising serum prolactin levels. We suggest MRI in patients with prolactin levels more than 100 ng/ml. In patients on oestrogen therapy MRI should be performed with only slightly elevated prolactin levels. Evidence of a microadenoma should be considered in planning further therapy, especially concerning the use of hormone replacement therapy or of bromocriptine.
