Notes: Summary Probucol has been used as a lipid-lowering agent for over 10 years. Lately it has been found that its antiatherogenic action is due mainly to its antioxidative capacity, in addition to its known lipid-lowering effect. To study the antioxidative capability of probucol and its influence on plaque developement we used the animal model of the LDL-receptor-defective Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbit. In this study we measured all lipid values before and after probucol feeding and compared them with corresponding values in untreated controls. Probucol levels were determined, as were the physiological antioxidants alpha and gamma tocopherol (vitamin E). Thiobarbituric reactive substances were measured in plasma as a parameter for lipid peroxidation. In addition to the biochemical measurements the plaque area was analyzed macroscopically and microscopically to check the antiatherosclerotic effect and correlate it with the biochemical parameters. In four experiments we showed that probucol treatment in WHHL rabbits decreases the progression of atherosclerotic plaques by way of a combined lipid-lowering and antioxidative effect.

Notes: The objective of this study was to compare the biological and economic efficiency of a seasonal pasture-based spring calving system of milk production on a high-rainfall, heavy-clay soil [Kilmaley (KMY)] to that on a lower-rainfall free-draining soil [Moorepark (MPN)] in Ireland. The physical performance data were obtained from a 3-year study (1998–2000) carried out at both sites. Analysis of the system of milk production at the two sites was undertaken using the Moorepark Dairy System Model. Herbage dry-matter production was greater at the MPN site with a greater proportion being produced between 1 September and 1 May. On average, over the 3 years, the system of milk production at the MPN site had a higher stocking rate (2·34 vs. 1·89 cows ha−1), higher milk production per cow (6421 vs. 5781 kg per cow), longer grazing season (250 vs. 149 d) and a higher proportion of the diet of the herd from grazed grass (0·70 vs. 0·40) than at KMY. Economic analysis showed that, in a 468 100 kg European Union milk quota scenario, the profitability at the MPN site was €28 417 greater than at the KMY site. At similar milk production per cow it was €19 138 greater. Monte Carlo simulation showed that the MPN site was stochastically dominant over the KMY site. Sensitivity analyses showed that farm profit was most sensitive to changes in milk price. The results also indicated that milk production in the future may not be sustainable economically on high-rainfall, heavy-clay soils in Ireland.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Computertomographie liefert als einzige Untersuchungsmethode in der Radiologie horizontale Schnitte.
Notes: Summary Computed tomography is the only method of radiological examination to show horizontal sections of the patient. Soft tissues, tumors, ligaments and hematomas can be evaluated. Regions, such as the acetabulum, os sacrum and iliosacral joint, that are difficult to examine by other means can be displayed. The examination is of little harm to the patient. The exhibition shows examples of fractures of the pelvis, part of which could only be recognized by CT. There are also examples of tumors, femoral-head necrosis and osteomyelitis.

Notes: Summary Quantitative receptor autoradiography on sections of the human brain raises methodical problems of which some are relevant also for studies in animal tissue, but others are unique in studies of human brain tissue. Procedures for the following methodical aspects are discussed image analysis for quantitation of the regional distribution of receptor densities, saturation analysis on autoradiographs, influence of age and post-mortem delay and quenching of β-radiation in brain tissue. The solutions proposed to these problems make receptor autoradiography in the human brain to a reliable method for studies of chemical neuroanatomy.

Notes: Summary Pelvic fractures are often difficult to evaluate by conventional tomography due to the complex bony structures of the pelvis. Axial CT scans clearly show the extent of the fracture, location and size of fragments. Abnormalities of the hip joint space, like loose bone fragments are easy to demonstrate. Furthermore the biomechanically important injuries of the sacroiliac joint and sacrum are more often detected by computed tomography.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Vom 1. 10. 1977 bis 31. 12. 1983 wurden 269 rekonstruktive Eingriffe an der A. profunda femoris vorgenommen, davon 16mal als sog. femoroprofundaler Bypass, d. h. als Bypass von der A. femoralis communis zur peripheren A. profunda femoris.
Notes: Summary From 1 October 1977 to 31 December 1983, 269 reconstructive operations on the deep femoral artery were done, 26 of them as a femoroprofundal bypass, i.e., a bypass from the common femoral artery to the distal A. profunda femoris. Twenty-four patients had occlusive disease stage III or IV with imminent amputation, 2 had stage II with poor risk, and 16 had had one or more previous operations in the groin. There was improvement in the occlusive disease in 53.9% and no change in 26.9%; two amputations of the upper and one of the lower limb had do be performed. Two patients died postoperatively. The femoroprofundal bypass is a limb-saving procedure in peripheral arterial occlusive disease.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The antiviral activity of cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C) against the mouse cytomegalovirus was investigated in animal experiments using various dosages. The substance did not exhibit any virostatic effect, but on the contrary fostered the viral infection. The virus concentration in the liver after administration of five dosages of 30 mg/kg of cytosine arabinoside was 35 times higher than that in untreated animals, and after five dosages of 45 mg/kg was 70 times higher. In addition the mortality rate for infected animals treated with cytosine arabinoside was significantly higher in relation to dosage. Cytosine arabinoside also acts as an immunosuppressor in humans. Adverse effects in cytomegalo-infection can therefore not be excluded. The use of cytosine arabinoside in therapy would thus appear to be highly questionable.

Notes: The pharmacokinetics of (S)-propranolol were compared after the oral administration of a 40 mg dose of the pure enantiomer and an 80 mg dose of a racemic mixture of (R,S)-propranolol. The results of this study indicate that the bioavailability of (S)-propranolol, as expressed by the mean area uner the concentration-time curve (AUC) and maximum serum concentration, is lower after 40mg of the optically pure drug than after the racemic drug.

Notes: Abstract The production of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites (tapes) consisting of high-strength/high-modulus UHMWPE fibers and LDPE matrix is described. Two production techniques are applied: impregnation by aqueous powder dispersion and dry powder impregnation. The produced composites exhibit excellent mechanical properties. Depending on the fiber volume content which can be obtained: tensile strength (in fiber direction) 460–1100 MPa, elastic modulus 11–22 GPa, and elongation at break 4.9–8.3%.
