    Notizen: The use of ion beam damage to locally suppress photoelectrochemical etching of GaAs has been previously described. This study examines the limitations on the resolution of patterns formed by this technique, using a focused ion beam. Directly written patterns of damage were formed in Si-doped n+ GaAs (1×1018 cm−3) by implantation with a 120 keV focused beam of Ga ions. Photoelectrochemical etching of the substrate was suppressed, not only in the implanted regions themselves, but also within a region extending a few micrometers beyond the implanted region. This suppression distance limits the smallest pattern feature or resolution achievable with this technique. The resolution was examined as a function of incident laser intensity, implant dose, the dimensions of the damaged areas, and distance between the damaged areas. A simple one-dimensional model suggests that the diffusion of the photogenerated carriers, relative to their reaction rate at the surface, determines the resolution achievable.

    Notizen: Aggressive fibromatosis is a rare, locally aggressive disease. It constitutes 0.3% of all solid tumors, but the tumor is rarely seen in the breast, particularly without pectoral muscle and fascial involvement. The etiology is unknown, but an association with Gardner's syndrome has been described. Clinical and imaging findings simulate breast carcinoma. A case in a 53-year-old female patient is reported.

    Notizen: Abstract:  It is recommended that mucocele-like lesions be excised to enable differentiation between benign lesions and carcinoma. In addition, ductal carcinoma in situ may be found in close association. A small series of 12 lesions audited at BreastScreen Auckland has shown six benign, one atypical, and five malignant lesions. Although this is a small series, a high rate of associated malignancy has been reported.

    Notizen: The relationship between heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (V̇o2) has been investigated in a sample of 20 low-risk, term neonates aged 14–48 hrs. Repeated, simultaneous measurements of HR and V̇o2 were performed on each neonate during each of three epochs ordered by increasing level of activity. A robust linear relationship was found between HR and V̇o2, with an average correlation of.90. Substantial variation was observed across individuals in the slope of the HR-V̇o2 regression line. This variation was curvilinearly related to ponderal index (PI), with low PI neonates having the shallowest and steepest slopes. These findings suggest that HR may provide a flexible, non-restrictive means of estimating neonatal V̇o2 but that the impact of prenatal growth history and postnatal growth performance on the estimation of V̇o2 from HR merits further investigation.

    Notizen: Despite many findings of consistent sex differences in verbal and non-verbal skills, there has been no systematic investigation of the performance of girls and boys on tests of creativity. This is particularly puzzling in view of the unequivocal superiority of the female in terms of verbal fluency. A study of the responses of 60 boys and 60 girls between 71/2 and 91/2 yr of age on the Wallach-Kogan tests revealed that the girls scored higher than the boys on the Fluency measure but not on the Originality measure. The results are interpreted in terms of the differential development of verbal and non-verbal skills in the two sexes and the “divergent cognitive style”–the latter apparently being more a characteristic of the male than of tin-female.

    Notizen: The angle resolved velocity distributions of excited (4F7/2) and ground state (4F9/2) Rh atoms ejected from the Rh {100} surface due to keV Ar+ ion bombardment are described with a model that takes into account the local electronic environment. The lifetime of the excitation probability for each excited Rh atom is assumed to depend on the local embedded-atom method (EAM) density. It is thus possible to distinguish between ejected atoms that experience very little difference in their electronic environments. Although most excited atoms that survive with significantly high excitation probabilities originate from the surface layer, it is not uncommon for an atom beneath the surface to eject from a disrupted environment and end up with a high excitation probability. This model improves upon a previous one, where the lifetime was assumed to vary with the height above the original surface.

    Notizen: The metabolism and intracellular localization of salicylic acid (SA) was investigated in soybean (Glycine max[L.] cv Williams 82) cell suspension cultures. [7–14C]SA was added to the cell cultures, the metabolites were extracted from the cells at various time points and analysed by TLC and HPLC. The [7–14C]SA was taken up rapidly from the culture media and converted primarily to SA 2-O-β-d-glucose (SAG). Lower levels of glucosylated 2,5-dihydroxbenzoic acid (gentisic acid) and methyl salicylate 2-O-β-d-glucose were also formed. Examination of the intracellular localization of the glucose conjugates revealed that all of the conjugates associated with the protoplasts were found in the vacuoles. An SA glucosyltransferase (SAGT) that could catalyse the formation of SAG from SA and UDP-glucose could be extracted from soybean cells and assayed in vitro. Increasing concentrations of SA added to the culture media induced the SAGT activity. The highest levels of SAGT activity were observed in cells treated with 0.5 mM SA. The SAGT activity in these cells was 88-fold greater than the SAGT activity in the untreated cells. The intracellular localization of the SAGT activity was also examined and it was determined that the majority of the SAGT activity in the protoplasts was located outside the vacuole. Therefore, it appears as if SAG is formed from SA outside the vacuole, presumably in the cytoplasm, and then subsequently transported into the vacuole where it accumulates.
