    Notes: : The spatial changes in abiotic and biotic variables from riverine to lacustrine areas characterized by the river-lake concept of reservoir function was applied to the Tomhannock Reservoir, Rensselaer County, New York. To identify these longitudinal gradients, a two-year investigation (May 1991 to October 1992) was conducted to measure primary productivity, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll α and phytoplankton biomass at three locations in the 705-ha water supply reservoir. Emphasis was placed on the measurement of primary production using the carbon-14 artificial incubator (photosynthetron) technique. The average annual production in 1992 was 247.3 gm−2 245 d−1, ranging from 52 to 2677 mg C m−2. Mean alphaB (assimilation efficiency), PBm (assimilation number), and Ik (saturation irradiance) were 4.40 mg C mgChl−1 E−1 m−2, 3.82 mg C mgChl−1 h−1, and 236.5 μE m−2 s−1, respectively. Neither seasonal nor spatial variability of these photosynethetic parameters were observed. Except for Secchi depth, distinct longitudinal zones from river inflow to darn were not statistically demonstrated in the Tomhannock Reservoir. Mean extinction coefficient, chlorophyll α and total phosphorus concentrations decreased; Secchi transparency and phytoplankton biomass increased; while primary productivity and dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration remained the same from headwater to darn. These baseline data will be used to assess the future effectiveness of best management practices (BMPs) recently instituted on selected watershed farmland in an attempt to reduce the detrimental impact of agricultural activities on drinking water quality.

    Notes: The theory for the structure function of an advected scalar quantity in turbulent flow by Effinger and Grossman [Phys. Fluids A 1, 1021 (1989)], is compared with data. The theoretical structure function is transformed to a spatial power spectrum, which is found to have negative values. The theory does not agree with data for the spectrum. The theory has startling differences with Batchelor's theory [J. Fluid Mech. 5, 113 (1959)] for the viscous-diffusive and viscous-convective ranges.

    Notes: Kolmogorov's equation [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 32, 16 (1941)] relates the two-point second- and third-order velocity structure functions and the energy dissipation rate. The analogous next higher-order two-point equation relates the third- and fourth-order velocity structure functions and the structure function of the product of pressure-gradient difference and two factors of velocity difference, denoted Tijk. The equation is simplified on the basis of local isotropy. Laboratory and numerical simulation data are used to evaluate and compare terms in the equation, examine the balance of the equation, and evaluate components of Tijk. Atmospheric surface-layer data are used to evaluate Tijk in the inertial range. Combined with the random sweeping hypothesis, the equation relates components of the fourth-order velocity structure function. Data show the resultant error of this application of random sweeping. The next-order equation constrains the relationships that have been suggested among components of the fourth-order velocity structure function. The pressure structure function, pressure-gradient correlation, and mean-squared pressure gradient are related to Tijk. Inertial range formulas are discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An exact equation is obtained which relates the products of two-point differences of a scalar quantity and those differences with the difference of velocity and other quantities. The averages of such products are structure functions. Equations that follow from the scalar equation but with no other approximations are called "exact" here. Exact equations for structure functions are obtained. Ensemble, temporal, and spatial averages are all considered because each one produces different statistical equations from the others and because they differ in application to theoretical purposes, experiment, and numerical simulation of turbulence. The midpoint and the difference of the two points at which the hydrodynamic quantities are obtained are X and r, respectively. Use of X and r as independent variables combined with Reynolds decomposition reveals quantifiable effects of inhomogeneity and large-scale structures. Exact equations obtained by averaging over a sphere in r space have a particularly simple form. The case of a numerical simulation that has periodic boundary conditions leads to particularly simple equations. For the case of grid-generated wind-tunnel turbulence, approximate equations are derived relating structure functions of fluctuations. Applications of the equations to experiments and direct numerical simulation are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Relationships are derived between pressure–velocity–velocity (PVV) statistics, fourth-order velocity structure functions, and the pressure structure function. The PVV statistics are related to the correlation of pressure at one point with the product of two velocity components at another point. The Navier–Stokes equation, isotropy, and incompressibility are used; no other assumption is used. Thus the relationships apply for all Reynolds numbers and can be used as a benchmark to determine how well turbulence models mimic pressure fluctuations in Navier–Stokes turbulence. A necessary condition limiting compressibility is given. The inertial-range and viscous-range formulas of the PVV statistics are obtained. The results are compared with previous theories that used the joint Gaussian approximation. Data from grid turbulence are used to evaluate the statistics.

    Notes: A preoccupation with cephalopelvic disproportion is the main reason for a reluctance to abandon the conservative attitude towards labour which prevails in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In a series of 1000 consecutive primigravidae, in which an active approach to labour was adopted, the incidence of disproportion was less than 1 per cent and there was notable absence of trauma, especially to the child.Oxytocin stimulation is recommended as an essential instrument to define disproportion when the natural forces are not adequate. Excessive caution is criticized because a diagnosis of disproportion cannot be made unless uterine action is adequate. It is concluded that the possibility of cephalopelvic disproportion does not justify a passive attitude towards labour in a modern maternity unit.
