    Notes: Abstract The chemical composition of the mucus from three hard corals (Acropora formosa, Pachyseris speciosa and Fungia fungites) and three soft corals (Sarcophyton sp., Lemnalia sp., and Cespitularia sp.) collected on the Great Barrier Reef (1982–1985) was determined. Significant variation exists in the composition and structure of the six mucus samples, indicating the absence of a common structure for coral mucus. In all cases protein and/or carbohydrate polymers are the major components of the mucus, and lipids are present only in small amounts. The glycose composition varied between species, with fucose (F. fungites and Lemnalia sp.), arabinose (A. formosa), galactose (P. speciosa) and N-acetyl glucosamine (Sarcophyton sp.) being present in high concentrations. With the exception of Sarcophyton sp. and Lemnalia sp., all mucus samples were acidic and contained significant sulphate but no uronic or sialic acids. The amino acid composition of the mucus samples was not unusual, apart from A. formosa, which contained a high percentage of serine and threonine, and F. fungites, which had high levels of glutamic acid present.

    Notes: Cellulose p-aminophenacyl ether (I) has been prepared from cotton and the partial p-aminophenacyl ester of carboxymethyl cellulose (III) has also been prepared. Derivatives (I) and (III) have been diazotized and then used to initiate polymerization of acrylonitrile. In the presence of ferrous sulfate the polymerization proceeds to formation of a graft copolymer and no polyacrylonitrile homopolymer was detected. Attempts to graft styrene and vinyl acetate on the same derivatives were not successful. Thermal degradation of the diazonium derivatives leads to insolubilization, probably due to crosslinking by combination of free radicals. Attempts to prepare cellulose p-aminobenzoate by reaction of cellulose derivatives with p-aminobenzoyl chloride (IV) in the presence of a basic catalyst led to polymerization of (IV) and to the formation of a supposed cellulose-poly-p-benzamide graft copolymer.

    Notes: The effects on mechanical properties of heterogeneous acetylation and methylation of isotropic cellulose films have been studied. The effects on breaking load, extensibility, yield point, elastic recovery, and initial Young's modulus in the air-dry state were very small. It is concluded that these properties are not markedly influenced in cellulose derivatives by variation of the nature of the intermolecular cohesive forces in the way that might have been anticipated from the analogy of a simple molecular network. It is suggested that the lack of effect of such treatments, and also the cause of the low elastic recovery in cellulose and its derivatives, may be connected with molecular stiffness, dipole distribution, and supracrystalline structure. Cellulose and its derivatives are contrasted with nylon in this respect. The effects of methylation or acetylation on mechanical properties in water are much more extensive and are attributed to a solubilizing effect which, in the case of progressive acetylation, is ultimately opposed by the formation of acetate-acetate intermolecular bonds that are relatively stable to water.

    Notes: Attempted sulfonation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) film results predominantly in reaction at the surface of the film owing to lack of penetration by the reagents. When the film is pre-swollen with a wide range of liquids, however, sulfonation with oleum proceeds smoothly through the body of the film, and a flexible membrane of low electrical resistance is produced. The more important variables in the swelling and sulfonation steps have been investigated. Side reactions during the sulfonation lead to the introduction of carbonyl and ethylenic groupings into the polymer molecule. The latter grouping is assumed to be responsible for the lack of stability of the membrane towards oxidants.

    Notes: The deoxy-di-n-propylamino (II) and deoxy-thio (V) derivatives of ethyl cellulose have been prepared. Catalyzed polymerization of acrylonitrile in the presence of (II) results in chain transfer between the polyacrylonitrile radical and the tertiary amino group, with subsequent graft polymerization. A copolymer of ca. 40% polyacrylonitrile grafted on ethyl cellulose was isolated by a combination of fractional precipitation and selective extraction. Polymerization of styrene in presence of (V) results in chain transfer between the polystyrene radical and the thiol groups, with subsequent graft polymerization. Fractional precipitation of the product yielded a fraction whose ethoxyl analysis corresponds to a copolymer of 86% polystyrene grafted on ethyl cellulose.
