Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In Tabelle I geben die Verff. eine Liste der ihnen bekannten Tiefenbeben im östlichen Mittelmeer.
Notes: Summary In Table I the authors give a list of known deep-focus earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean. Fig. 1 shows that their epicenters generally lie in the zones of active volcanoes, as in the regions surrounding the Pacific Ocean; however, their coincidence with positive gravity anomalies is less evident.

Notes: Summary Nitric oxide (nitrogen monoxide, NO) acts as a signal transducer in a variety of cells. In the present study rat pancreatic islets were perifused with physiologically relevant glucose concentrations in the presence or absence of various NO-modulating agents. Perifusion in the presence of 0.1–1 mmol/l of the NO synthase inhibitor, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine or of 10 μmol/l of the NO-scavenger, 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (carboxy-PTIO), resulted in an inhibition of the early phase of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by 60–65 % and 46 %, respectively. Light- and electron-microscopic studies revealed that pancreatic islets constitutively express NO-synthase in alpha and delta cells, where it is confined to the secretory granules. Therefore, these data indicate that NO may be important in the signal transduction pathway of the early phase of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. [Diabetologia (1998) 41: 292–299]

Notes: Abstract. Conventional post-processing of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) by 3D spiral CT, 3D MRI and 2D DSA is often hampered by extended artefacts due to patient movements during examination. In this paper an image registration procedure prior to the digital subtraction is introduced allowing an enhanced visualization of the contrast agent. The object displacement is detected by analysis of image deformations in small local regions. The motion pattern is used to compute a new synthetic mask of maximum congruence with the contrast medium image. This new mask image is then used in the subsequent subtraction. The algorithm works fully automatically and does not need any interactive placement of landmarks. Results obtained from subtraction of uncorrected and corrected sequences were compared with each other. The registration procedure provided good results in the suppression of subtraction artefacts and in the enhancement of vascular structures. Results are presented from subtraction of 2D and 3D data from CTA, MR mammography and coronary angiography.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to evaluate diagnostic MRI criteria in Wegener's granulomatosis of the nasal cavity, the paranasal sinuses and orbits. Between March 1991 and January 1996, 62 patients with biopsy-proven Wegener's granulomatosis were studied with T1- and T2-weighted spin-echo (SE) sequences. In 32 patients coronal postcontrast T1-weighted images were obtained. Mucosal thickening of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses was demonstrated as high-intensity lesions on T2-weighted SE sequences in 57 patients (92 %). Of this group, inflammatory granulomatous tissue was found on biopsy in 30 patients (48 %) in the nasal cavity and in 4 patients (6 %) in the paranasal sinuses. In 23 patients (37 %) biopsy revealed unspecific inflammatory changes without evidence of granulomatous tissue. In 14 patients (23 %) granulomas were depicted as low-signal intensity lesions on T1- and T2-weighted SE sequences in the paranasal sinuses and orbits. In 5 patients (8 %) osseous destruction was found. After gadolinium injection, 12 of 14 granulomas showed inhomogeneous signal enhancement. In two granulomas no enhancement was found. The MRI technique is helpful in the diagnosis of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis. In the initial inflammatory process of Wegener's granulomatosis, it is not possible to differentiate between mucosal inflammation and granulomatous tissue in MRI. In the later stage of granulomatous transformation, granulomas can be depicted as low-signal-intensity lesions. Therefore, Wegener's granulomatosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with low-signal-intensity lesions on T1- and T2-weighted SE sequences of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and orbits.

Notes: Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and velocity-encoded cine magnetic resonance (VEC-MR) imaging were performed in 23 subjects to assess the severity of renal artery stenosis. MRA was used for detection of stenosis, demonstrating a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 80%; the severity of stenosis was overestimated in 33%. VEC-MR was used to quantify the renal flow oattern and was successful in 11 subjects. Mean blood flow of normal renal arteries (420 +- 107 ml/min) was significantly higher (P 〈 0.01) than mean blood flow of stenotic arteries (131 +- 46ml/min). The flow profile displayed both systolic and diastolic peaks in 75% of the normal arteries, while the flow in stenotic arteries showed only a single systolic peak in all cases. The systolic peak in stenotic arteries occurred significantly later (32 +- 3% of the period of one cardiac cycle) than in normal subjects (21 +- 7%) (P 〈 0.05). Phase-contrast MR is likely to gain considerable importance in the noninvasive aetection and quantification of renal artery stenosis.

Notes: [Auszug] Using new data, the following partly empirical equations have been set up: log.# = 9-4 + 2-14 ML - 0-054 ML* Ms - MB = A (Ms - B), where, originally1, A = 0-4, B = 7; further investigation suggests slight numerical revision. Notes: [Auszug] THE velocity of longitudinal waves in the earth increases with depth down to the core, at a depth of about 2,900 km., where there is a discontinuous drop from 13.7 km. to about 8 km. per sec. Within the core, the velocity has usually been calculated as increasing gradually to about 11.5 km. per ...
