    Notes: The principle of ultrasonic spectrometry is based on the measurement of the ultrasonic extinction caused by the presence of particles. From measurements at different frequencies and with the knowledge of the ultrasonic extinction cross section of the particles, a system of linear equations can be established and solved to obtain the particle size distribution and particle concentration. With an experimental apparatus covering the frequency range from 1.7 MHz to 81 MHz, particles ranging from 20 to 1000 μm in diameter may be analyzed. The measurements can be carried out with particle concentrations as high as 10% by volume.

    Notes: A statistical analysis is made for the extinction of radiations in suspensions, whereby the whole range of possible particle concentrations is covered. The extinction signals are characterized by their average value and by a characteristic length of fluctuation. For simplicity, the considerations are restricted to geometric ray propagation in dispersions of perfectly absorbent, monosized spherical particles. An extinction equation is derived, which reduces to Lambert-Beer's law in the limit of low particle concentrations. For higher concentrations, significant deviations from Lamberg-Beer's law due to steric particle-particle interactions are predicted. The characteristic length of the fluctuations is a function of particle diameter and transmission and has a broad minimum with medium transmissions, allowing for maximum resolution with measurements in this range.

    Notes: The interaction of suspended particles with ultrasonic waves can lead to changes in the sonic velocity and also to extinction of the waves. An evaluation of the frequency dependence of ultrasonic extinction offers the most appropriate means of determining the concentration and size distribution of particles suspended in a fluid. With an experimental apparatus covering the frequency range from 1.7 to 81 MHz, particles ranging from about 20 to 1000 μm in diameter can be analysed. The measurements can be conducted with particle concentrations as high as 10% by volume.

    Notes: So far, the evaluation of extinction measurements has mostly relied on Bouguer-Lambert-Beer's law (BLBL), even though BLBL is known to be valid in the limit of low concentrations only. With higher particle concentrations, particle-particle interactions such as multiple scattering, dependent scattering and steric interactions can lead to important deviations from BLBL. In a discussion of the various interaction mechanisms, steric interactions are shown to be dominating in a wide and practically important range of parameters. For the theoretical description of steric interactions, different complementary models are introduced, including a statistical model, a layer model and a numerical simulation model. The various approaches coincide to yield a simple extinction equation in two versions, applying to the regimes of Fraunhofer diffraction and straight ray propagation, respectively. In any case, BLBL is found as the low concentration limit of the extinction equation. All considerations are restricted, so far, to the case of monodisperse spherical particles.

    Notes: The transmission and diffraction of radiation through dense monolayers of monodisperse opaque spheres were studied for the Fraunhofer domain. Theoretical considerations, numerical calculations and experiments on ultrasonic transmission and on laser light transmission and diffraction yielded corresponding results. Complementary studies included the cases of sterically non-interacting particles (by numerical simulation) and of small particle size parameters (by ultrasonic extinction). Transmission was found to be, in general, a non-linear function of the monolayer density. Secondary effects on the transmission can be attributed to the effect of the monolayer structure (characterized by the pair correlation function) on the angular distribution of diffracted intensity. The results were found to be in accordance with experimental results on extinction in three-dimensional systems.

    Notes: The Bouguer-Lambert-Beer law (BLBL), commonly used to describe the extinction of radiation in disperse systems, is known to be valid in the limit of low concentrations only. In Part [1] it was shown that steric particle-particle interactions lead to important effects in the range of high particle concentration and two versions of a more general extinction equation including steric interactions were derived for the regimes of fraunhofer diffraction and ray propagation in this part experimental evidence for the effects of steric interactions on the extinction of radiation in suspensions of monodisperse spherical particles is given. Various experiments on light extinction and on ultrasonic extinction are combined to cover a broad range of particle size parameters, mechanisms of particle-wave interaction and receiver apertures.
