Notes: An analytical and transmission electron microscope study showed that nonequilibrium gas-to-solid condensation in an AlO–SiO vapor yielded solid units with well defined compositional peaks at 11.5 wt % Al2O3 and 41–47 wt % Al2O3. These peaks coincide with metastable eutectic points in the Al2O3–SiO2 phase diagram. The compositions of thermally annealed units support the presence of a (metastable) miscibility gap between ∼15–∼60 wt % Al2O3. The important finding in this analysis is the determinative role of metastable eutectics in nonequilibrium gas-to-solid condensation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] In the cooling solar nebula, solid particles may be formed by condensation from a vapour in the inner part of the nebula5-7 and it has been suggested5,6 that the terrestrial planets and asteroids themselves are formed by accumulation of these solid particles at temperatures 450 K. Notes: Abstract Subsolidus marginal zoning in calcium-poor clinopyroxenes and intermediate zoning in discontinuously zoned subcalcic- to calcium-rich clinopyroxenes from ironrich igneous rocks is used to calculate the interdiffusion coefficient, DCa−(Fe,Mg), parallel to the crystallographic caxis. Wagner's mathematical models describing the displacement of interfaces in solids as the result of isothermal diffusion are adopted. The steady-state heat flow equation is used to approximate the diffusion times. The calculated interdiffusion coefficients are of a reasonable order of magnitude, viz. 6.0×10−20−2.0×10−17cm2· sec−1 at about 900° C.

Notes: Abstract The cometary Leonid meteoroids represent a size range in between largest carbon-richIDPs and the smallest CI meteorites. Their dustball structure and chemistry offer anopportunity to constrain hierarchical dust accretion inferred from petrologic studies ofaggregate and cluster IDPs. The Leonid shower meteoroids of known ``comet ejection''ages provide an opportunity to study space weathering of cometary dust over periodsof up to several hundred years. The meteors and aggregate and cluster IDPs displaycontinuous thermal modification of organics and volatile element (Na, K-bearing phases), that occur as discrete minerals and amorphous solids each different response during kinetically controlled ablation. Leonid meteoroids are not excessively Na-rich. The occurrences of Leonid meteors can now be accurate predicted and combined withknowledge better models for the settling rates, collections of surviving dust becomea comet nucleus-sampling mission.
