Notes: Abstract. Poincaré-covariant quark models of the nucleon, the resonance and their excitations are explored. The baryon states are represented by eigenfunctions of the four-velocity and a confining mass operator, which reproduces the empirical baryon masses up to 1700 MeV to an accuracy of . Models of constituent-quark currents provide the relations between ground-state properties and transition amplitudes.

Notes: Abstract We estimate the accuracy of the conventional ansatz of approximating the lowest order absorptiveP-wave pion-deuteron interactions by pole term amplitudes. By comparing the matrix elements of the approximate pole term and complete absorptive reaction amplitudes for elasticπd scattering we find the pole term approximation to lead to better than 10% accuracy for both theP 11 andP 33 state interactions.

Notes: Abstract The description of pion absorption in nuclei in the Skyrme model is similar to that used in phenomenological meson theory. The main absorption mechanism can be described as a two-nucleon mechanism in which the initial pion is rescattered once prior to final absorption. The long range parts of the rescattering amplitudes for theS- andP-wave rescattering mechanisms have the conventional pion exchange form. The model predicts a strong increase of the isospin evenS-wave rescattering contribution to the absorption rate above threshold, which in the case of the deuteron would cause a rapid decrease of the netS-wave absorption rate with increasing pion energy.

Notes: Abstract The energy levels of the charm and bottom as well as the mixed flavour hyperons are calculated with the model in which the hyperons are described as bound states of a topologicalSU (2) soliton andK-, D- andB-mesons. The spectra are obtained in a modified version of the Skyrme model where the chiral symmetry breaking term in the Lagrangian density is modified so as to incorporate the different values of the decay constants of the mesons of different flavour. The predicted strange and charmed hyperon spectra are in very good agreement with the empirical values, while the bottom hyperon energies that are more sensitive to the short range dynamics are somewhat below the empirical values. The predicted hyperfine spectra are remarkably close to those obtained with the constituent quark model, more or less independently of the short-distance properties of the effective Lagrangian. We suggest that this feature reflects the presence of an induced nonabelian gauge potential generated by the interplay between “fast” and “slow” degrees of freedom in the meson-soliton system.

Notes: Abstract The topological soliton model, including its various extensions, is reviewed. The model is very compact and involves only small number of Lagrangian parameters which in principle are calculable from QCD. It provides a nice tool for describing the structure of baryons.

Notes: Abstract The general features of the spin dependence of the totalpp cross section for laboratory momenta ≧1 GeV/c may be accounted for by considering theπ- andρ-meson-exchange contributions toNΔ andΔΔ production.
