    Notes: Summary Intravenous diazoxide produced an immediate marked hypotension in both mild and severe hypertensive patients. Depression of vasomotor reflexes, tested by the Valsalva overshoot, and of pressor responsiveness to noradrenaline was found only in the group of mild hypertensives. Decreased pressor reactivity to noradrenaline was not due to a nonspecific vascular effect of diazoxide, because pressor responsiveness to angiotensin was simultaneously increased. Renal tubular reabsorption of sodium and water was increased shortly after injection of diazoxide, and there was also a significant retention of potassium. Correlation studies suggest that interference with vasomotor reflexes, and with vascular responsiveness to the sympathetic transmitter, can account only in part for the hypotensive action of diazoxide. The possible rôles of water and electrolyte redistribution remain to be elucidated.

    Notes: Summary Oral administration of a single 500 mg dose of guancydine rapidly (30 mins) produces a marked fall in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which lasts for at least 6 h, and is accompanied by tachycardia. Hypotension and tachycardia are more marked on standing, but conspicuous postural falls seldom occur. The decrease in blood pressure does not depend on angiotensin antagonism by guancydine, as pressor responses to angiotensin, as well as to noradrenaline, are not diminished by the drug. Marked fluid and electrolyte retention also occurs after guancydine administration, and is probably due to a reduction in glomerular filtration rate and increased tubular reabsorption of sodium. The time course of the various effects of guancydine closely parallels changes in the plasma concentration of the drug. A very precise quantitative relationship exists between the hypotensive effect and the log of plasma guancydine concentrations between 1 and 5 µg/ml.

    Abstract: Резюме Мы рассматриваем классическую систему, состояъую из двумерных елиничных векторов, связанных с одномерной решеткой {u k |k∈Z} и взаимодействующих через трансляционно инвариантные парные потенциалыW m =−ε|j−k|−s T m (u j u k ),ε〉0,s〉1; гдеm есть положительное целое число,T m — полинои Чебышева первого родаT m (u j u k ) = cos [m(ϕ j −ϕ k )], и {ϕ k } представля т углы, определяющие ориентации плоских ротаторов в произвольно выбранной системе координат. Для данногоs все модели потенциаловW m имеют одинаковую функцию распределения и различные средние могут быть определены не зависящим отm способом. Строго доказывается, что система имеет ориентационно упорядоченную устойчивую фазу при низкой, но конечной температуре, когда 1〈s〈2, и неупорядоченную фазу при любых конечных температурах, когдаs≥2. Эта теорема справедлива для соответствующей классической модели Гайзенберга и сферической модели, тогда как в модели Изинга упорядоченная фаза существует для 1〈s≤2. Приводятся результаты моделирования по методу монте Карло для случаяs=2, которяе сравниваются с результатами точно решаемой модели в случае взаимодействия ближайших соседей.     Notes: Summary We consider a classical, system, consisting of two-dimensional unit vectors associated with a one-dimensional lattice {u k |k∈Z} and interacting via translationally invariant pair potential(s) $$W_m = - \varepsilon \left| {j - k} \right|^{ - s} T_m (u_j \cdot u_k ), \varepsilon 〉 0,s 〉 1;$$ herem is a positive integer,T Tm is a Tchebyshev polynomial of the first kind: $$T_m (u_j \cdot u_k ) = \cos [m(\varphi _j - \varphi _k )],$$ and {ϕ k } are the angles defining the orientations of the plane rotators in an arbitrary reference frame. For a givens, all the potential modelsW m have the same partition function, and several averages can be defined in a way independent ofm; the system has been proven rigorously to possess an orientationally ordered phase stable at low but finite temperature when 1〈s〈2, and to disorder at all finite temperatures whens≥2. This theorem also holds for the corresponding classical Heisenberg and spherical models, whereas, in the Ising model, the ordered phase survives for 1〈s≤2. We report here Monte Carlo simulation results for the borderline case defined bys=2, and compare with its exactly solvable nearest-neighbour counterpart. The correlation functions show a significant amount of short- and intermediate-range orientational order, which decays slowly with temperature. The simulated system exhibits «spontaneous» ordering setting in atT *≤1.15, and this may conceivably reflect the conjectured transition to a phase with infinite susceptibility.

È noto che le interazioni dipolari non sono essenziali per l’ordinamento nematico, ma esse possono avere un ruolo significantivo in alcuni casi specifici; lungo le linee dell’approssimazione a modello reticolare già applicata in lavori di simulazione per cristalli liquidi, il nostro sistema può pertanto essere considerato come un caso estremo di modello di potenziale nematogenico. Il sistema possiede stato fondamentale antiferroelectrico ed, a temperature piú elevata, transisce ad una fase orientazionalmente disordinata; sono riportati per confronto i risultati delle trattazioni a campo medio, ed a modello sferico per tale transizione. Le proprietà strutturali furono investigate calcolando funzioni di correlazione orientazionale, e si è trovato che esse mostrano qualche differenza qualitativa rispetto ad altri modelli di potenziale previamente studiati per nematici.
    Abstract: Резюме В работе предлагается моделирование по методу Монте-Карло классической простой кубической решетки, образованной точечными диполями с тождественными дипольными моментами. Известно, что дипольные взаимодействия не являются существенными для нематическояо упорядочения, но они игроют существенную роль в некоторых специфических случаях. Рассматриваемая система обладает антиферроэлектрическим основным состоянием и, при высокой темлературе, претерпевает переход в ориентационно упорядоченную фазу. Проводится сравнение с приближ=yeнием среднего поля и рассмотрением в рамках сферической модели этого перехода. Псследуутся структурные свойства, посредством вычисления ориентационных корреляционных функций. Обнаружены нектторые ксчественные различия по сравнению с другими потенциалыми моделями, ранее рассмотренными для описания нематики.
    Notes: Summary The present work reports Monte Carlo calculations on a classical simple cubic lattice, consisting of point dipoles with identical dipole moments. Dipolar interactions are known not to be essential for nematic ordering, but they can play a significant role in some specific cases; along the lines of the lattice model approximation already used in simulation work on liquid crystals, our system can thus be considered as an extreme case of nematogenic potential model. The system possesses an antiferroelectric ground state and, at higher temperature, it undergoes a transition to an orientationally disordered phase; comparison with mean-field and spherical-model treatments of the transition is also reported. The structural properties were investigated by calculating orientational correlation functions and found to exhibit some qualitative differences with respect to other potential models previously investigated for nematics.

Il sistema possiede stato fondamentale antiferroelettrico ed, a temperatura piú elevata, transisce ad una fase orientazionalmente disordinata; si riportano per confronto i risultati della trattazione a campo medio per tale transizione. Le proprietà strutturali furono investigate calcolando funzioni di correlazione orientazionale, e si è trovato che esse mostrano qualche differenza qualitativa rispetto ad altri modelli di potenziale previamente studiati per nematici. I risultati di simulazione indicano una stretta somiglianza qualitativa con un analogo tridimensionale investigato in nostri precedenti lavori.
    Abstract: Резюме В этой работе предлагаются вычисления по методу Монте-Карло для классической квадратичной решетки, состоящей нз чнсто дипольных плоских ротаторов с тождественными дипольными моментами. Известно, что дипольные взаимодействия не являются существенными для нематического упорядочения, но они могут играть существенную роль в некоторых специфических случаях: в частности, в приближении модельной решетки, уже использованном при моделировании на жидких кристаллах, наша система может рассматриваться как предельный случай модели немтическочо потенциала. Рассмотренная система обладает антиферромагнитным основным состоянием и при высоких температурах она претерпевает переход в ориентационно разупорядоченную фазу; также проводится сравнение с рассмотрением этого перехода с помощью среднего поля. Исследуются структурные свойства, вычисляя ориентационные корреляционные функции. Обнаружено существование некоторых качественных различий по сравнению с моделями потенциалов, ранее использованных для нематиков. Результаты моделирования обнаруживают качественное подобие с трехмерным аналогом, исследованным в нашей предыдущей работе.

The system possesses an antiferroelectric ground state and, at higher temperature, it undergoes a transition to an orientationally disordered phase; comparison with the mean-field treatment of the transition is also reported. The structural properties were investigated by calculating orientational correlation functions, and found to exhibit some qualitative differences with respect to other potential models previously investigated for nematics. Simulation results indicate a close qualitative similarity with a three-dimensional analogue investigated in our previous work.

    Notes: Abstract An open-reading frame (ORF111) upstream of the glutamine synthetase I structural gene (glnA) in Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae encodes a protein which is highly homologous to the PII protein (encoded by glnB) of enteric bacteria. ORF111 was cloned in a number of different plasmid vectors and shown to complement a K. pneumoniae glnB mutant. We propose that ORF111 encodes the PII protein of R. leguminosarum and that it should be designated glnB.

    Notes: We report here that ntrB and ntrC genes of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli are cotranscribed with an open reading frame (called 0RF1) of unknown Unction. The promoter region of the 0RF1-ntrB-ntrC operon was mapped immediately upstream of ORF1 and two in vivo transcription initiation sites were identified, both preceded by −35/−10 promoter consensus sequences. Some major aspects differentiate ft leguminosarum from the enteric nitrogen regulatory system: the ntrBC genes are cotranscribed with 0RF1 which is homologous to an ORF located upstream of ntrBC of R. capsulatus and to the 0RF1 located upstream of the fis gene of Escherichia coir, ntrBC are not transcribed from a −24/−12 promoter and are only autogenously repressed. Moreover, the intracellular concentration of the NtrC protein increases when the bacterium is grown on ammonium salts, white under the same conditions the promoter of one of its target genes, glnII, is 12 times less active.
