    Notes: Laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the B–X system of 39K7Li, recorded on a Fourier transform interferometer, have allowed 47 vibrational levels of the electronic ground state to be observed. The ground state energies have been fitted to a Dunham polynomial expansion, and also directly to a numerical potential curve. Both fits reproduce the data to within the experimental accuracy of measurement (0.005 cm−1). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electronic transition dipole moment of the B0+u→X0+g transition in molecular iodine has been determined in the range 2.633≤Rcentroid≤6.035 A(ring). We have measured a decrease of ||μ¯e||2 of about 4 orders of magnitude, perhaps the largest variation of ||μ¯e||2 yet observed in a molecule.

    Notes: Vibrational levels up to v=107 of the (1)1Πg state of 39K2, which dissociates to K(4s)2S1/2+K(4p)2P3/2, have been observed in high-resolution Fourier transform records of C 1Πu→(1)1Πg fluorescence. From a revised analysis of this system, we have constructed a rotationless Rydberg–Klein–Rees (RKR) potential curve which extends to R=40.3 Å. Vibrational and rotational constants have been calculated from this curve. The parameters describing the Coulombic interactions between K(4s)+K(4p) atoms are given in a Hund's case (c) basis. From this work, the dissociation energy De for the (1)1Πg state is found to be 1290.30±0.02 cm−1, leading to a new value of Te=16 203.25±0.09 cm−1 for this state. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High resolution Fourier transform spectra of the microwave plasma used for diamond deposition has been obtained in the 3 μm range. The results show that methane is nearly totally dissociated in the plasma. The recombination of the products of dissociation gives mostly acetylene and methane which have been detected 20 cm downstream.

    Notes: Abstract In spite of the abundance and broad distribution of social wasps, little information exists concerning thermoregulation by individuals. We measured body temperatures of the yellowjackets Vespula germanica and V. maculifrons and examined their thermoregulatory mechanisms. V. germanica demonstrated thermoregulation via a decreasing gradient between thorax temperature and ambient temperature as ambient temperature increased. V. maculifrons exhibited a constant gradient at lower ambient temperatures but thorax temperature was constant at high ambient temperatures. Head temperature exhibited similar patterns in both species. In spite of low thermal conductances, a simple heat budget model predicts substantial heat loads in warm conditions in the absence of thermoregulation. Both species regurgitated when heated on the head. A smaller volume of regurgitant was produced at lower head temperatures and a larger volume at higher head temperatures. Small regurgitations resulted in stabilization of head temperature, while large ones resulted in 4°C decreases in head temperature. Regurgitation was rare when wasps were heated upon the thorax. Abdomen temperature was 3–4°C above ambient temperature, and approached ambient temperature under the hottest conditions. No evidence was found for shunting of hot hemolymph from thorax to abdomen as a cooling mechanism. The frequency of regurgitation in workers returning to the nest increased with ambient temperature. Regurgitation may be an important thermoregulatory strategy during heat stress, but is probably not the only mechanism used in yellowjackets.
