Abstract The elastic longitudinal stresses associated with the flow of jets of dilute polymer solutions from a short nozzle and their effect on the stability of the free jet are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The results obtained make it possible to take a fresh look at the ways in which a polymer additive affects the stability of high-velocity capillary jets.
