Notes: Abstract We show that the existence of low-scale gravity at the TeV scale could lead to a direct production of photons with energy above 1022 eV due to annihilation of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos on relic massive neutrinos of the galactic halo. Air showers initialized in the terrestrial atmosphere by these ultraenergetic photons could be collected in near future by the new generation of cosmic ray experiments.

Notes: Summary A modified agar gel diffusion precipitation test, using the addition of first heterologous and then homologous antigens, has been employed successfully for the serologic differentiation of wild and vaccine strains of poliovirus types 1 and 2. The results of identification of 50 type 1 and 56 type 2 strains were in complete agreement with those obtained with the conventional methods ofMcBride andWecker. The existence of qualitative antigenic differences between wild and vaccine strains of poliovirus has been demonstrated. The new method for the serologic intratypic differentiation of poliovirus types 1 and 2 is much simpler and more convenient than the procedures recommended byWecker andMcBride.

Notes: Summary Antisera against vaccine strains of poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3 adsorbed with concentrated antigens of “wild” strains of the same serologic types retained their neutralizing activity only for the homologous strains. This fact allowed the serologic differentiation between vaccine and wild strains of poliovirus. Intratypic differentiation of 29 type 1 strains, 4 type 2 strains and 5 type 3 strains was done with cross-adsorbed antisera.

Notes: Summary Morphological characteristics of Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever Virus indicate that it is closely related to the Bunyaviridae family. However, there are some features (e. g. formation of crystal-like patterns in infected cells) demonstrating differences to the other known Bunyaviridae.

Notes: Summary For the preparation of strain-specific antisera immune sera were exhausted by cross-adsorption with concentrated antigens of heterologous poliovirus strains of the corresponding types. The use of strain-specific, cross-adsorbed antisera in agar gel diffusion precipitation (AGDP) test allowed to perform a rapid intratypic differentiation of 42 type 1 strains (including 28 wild, 8 vaccine and 6 intermediate variants), 11 type 2 strains (5 wild and 6 vaccine variants) and 19 type 3 (3 wild and 16 vaccine) strains of poliovirus. The results of intratypic differentiation of polioviruses obtained in AGDP corresponded completely to those recorded by the methods ofMcBride andWecker as well as by our modified AGDP test or neutralization tests reported in papers I and III of this series. The use of strainspecific cross-adsorbed antisera simplifies greatly the antigenic identification of wild and vaccine strains of poliovirus types 1,2, and 3 and makes it more reliable.

Notes: Summary Variational principles for elliptic boundary-value problems as well as linear initial-value problems have been derived by various investigators. For initial-value problems Tonti and Reddy have used a convolution type of bilinear form of the functional for the time-like coordinate. This introduces a certain amount of directionality thereby reflecting the initial-value nature of the problem. In the present investigation the methods of Tonti and Reddy are used to derive the appropriate variational formulation for the transonic flow problem. A number of linear and non-linear examples have been investigated. As a test for the existence of directionality, finite-differences are used to discretize the variational integral. For initial-value problems of wave equation and diffusion equation type, fully implicit finite-difference approximations are recovered. The small-disturbance transonic equation leads to the Murman and Cole differencing theory; when applied to the full potential-flow equations, the rotated difference scheme due to Jameson is obtained.

Notes: Summary For Courant numbers larger than one and cell Reynolds numbers larger than two, oscillations and in some cases instabilities are typically found with implicit numerical solutions of the fluid dynamics equations. This behavior has sometimes been associated with the loss of diagonal dominance of the coefficient matrix. It is shown here that these problems can in fact be related to the choice of the spatial differences, with the resulting instability related to aliasing or non-linear interaction. Appropriate “filtering” can reduce the intensity of these oscillations and in some cases possibly eliminate the instability. These filtering procedures are equivalent to a weighted average of conservation and non-conservation differencing. The entire spectrum of filtered equations retains a three-point character as well as second-order spatial accuracy. Burgers equation has been considered as a model. Several filters are examined in detail, and smooth solutions have been obtained for extremely large cell Reynolds numbers.

Notes: The convergence properties of an iterative solution technique for the Reduced Navier-Stokes equations are examined for two-dimensional steady subsonic flow over bump and trough geometries. Techniques for decreasing the sensitivity to the initial pressure approximation, for fine meshes in particular, are investigated. They are shown to improve the robustness of the relaxation process and to decrease the computational work required to obtain a converged solution. A semi-coarsening multigrid technique that has previously been found to be particularly advantageous for high-Reynolds-number (Re) flows with flow separation and with highly stretched surface-normal grids is applied herein to further accelerate convergence. Solutions are obtained for the laminar flow over a trough that is more severe than has been considered to date. Sufficient axial grid refinement in this case leads to a shock-like reattachment and, for sufficiently large Re, to a local ‘divergence’ of the numerical computations. This ‘laminar flow breakdown’ appears to be related to an instability associated with high-frequency fine-grid modes that are not resolvable with the present modelling. This behaviour may be indicative of dynamic stall or of incipient transition. The breakdown or instability is shown to be controllable by suitable introduction of transition turbulence models or by laminar flow control, i.e. small amounts of wall suction. This lends further support to the hypothesis that the instability is of a physical rather than numerical character and suggests that full three-dimensional analysis is required to properly capture the flow behaviour. Another inference drawn from this investigation is that there is a need for careful grid refinement studies in high-Re flow computations, since coarser grids may yield oscillation-free solutions that cannot be obtained on finer grids.

Notes: This study extends the reduced Navier-Stokes (RNS) global pressure relaxation procedure developed by Rubin and co-workers for external flow to internal flow applications. The streamwise pressure gradient is split into a backward-differenced or initial value component, as in boundary layer marching, and a forward-differenced or boundary value component that represents the elliptic downstream effects. The streamwise convection terms are upwind-differenced and all other streamwise derivatives are backward-differenced. We thus obtain a standard boundary layer marching technique imbedded in a conventional line relaxation technique. For compressible flow the pressure iteration determines the interior flow interation as well as the inlet mass flux that is consistent with the outflow pressure boundary condition. Results have been computed for incompressible flow in both rectangular and curved channels, and for subsonic compressible flow in the simulation of an aerofoil in a wind tunnel. Converged solutions were obtained over a range of Reynolds numbers generating small to moderately large separation bubbles.
