    Notes: Summary The astroglial cells have been studied in the lizard spinal cord by means of metallic impregnations, immunohistochemical (glial fibrillary acidic protein) and ultrastructural methods. Three astroglial cell types have been immunohistochemically identified: ependymocytes, radial astrocytes and astrocytes. Transitional forms have also been observed. Scarce immunopositive ependymocytes were located in the dorsal and ventral regions of the ependyma. The radial astrocytic somata were located around the ependymal layer and their processes reached the subpial glia limitans. Typical astrocytes were the most abundant astroglial cell type; astrocytes located in the ventral horn showed a greater development than those of the dorsal horn. In the white matter, the astrocytes were large and their processes formed part of the subpial glia limitans; on some occasions, astrocytic cell bodies also formed part of this subpial limitans. Transitional elements between astrocytes and radial astrocytes were observed in both grey and white matter. The perivascular and subpial glia limitans were continuous and showed a strong immunoreactivity. The comparative analysis of our results in the lizard spinal cord with those in other vertebrate groups leads us to conclude that reptiles could represent the key group in the phylogenetic evolution of the astroglial cells in vertebrates.

    Notes: Summary A stimulatory effect on prolactin secretion had been describe after acute and systemic administration of met-enkephalin, but the effects of this opioid after chronic administration has not been reported, and the response of mammotroph cells is not clear. As a complement to previous studies, a morphometric analysis (light and electron microscopy) was carried out on prolactin cells from female rats treated chronically with met-enkephalin. Clear features of cellular hyperactivity appeared after chronic and systemic administration of the opioid, and these persisted for two weeks. The changes consisted in increases of cellular, cytoplasmic and nuclear areas, volume and surface densities of the Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum, as well as the numbers of exocytotic figures. These morphological alterations were paralleled by an increase in serum prolactin levels as detected by RIA. It is concluded that the increase in the synthesis and secretory activity of prolactin cells following chronic and systemic administration of met-enkephalin is very similar to those observed after acute and intraventricular administration.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution and the structural, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical characteristics of the astroglial cells in the spinal cord of the adult barbel (Barbus comiza) have been studied by means of metallic impregnations (Golgi and gold-sublimate), immunohistochemical (GFAP and vimentin) and electron microscopic techniques. GFAP-positive cells were mainly distributed in the ependyma and in the periependymal region, but they have also been observed at subpial level in the anterior column. The ependymocytes were heterogeneous cells because they showed different immunohistochemical characteristics: GFAP-positive, vimentin-positive or non-immunoreactive cells. The radial astrocytes showed only GFAP immunoreactivity, and their processes ended at the subpial zone forming a continuous subpial glia limitans. Desmosomes and gap junctions between soniata and processes of radial astrocytes were numerous, and a relationship between radial astroglial processes and the nodes of Ranvier was also described. The perivascular glia limitans was poorly developed and it was not complete in the blood vessels of the periependymal zone; in this case, the basal lamina was highly developed. An important characteristic in the barbel spinal cord was the existence of a zone with an abundant extracellular space near the ependyma. The presence of radial astroglial somata at subpial level, the existence of vimentin-positive ependymocytes and the abundant extracellular space in the periependymal zone is discussed in relation to the regeneration capacity and the continuous growth showed by fish. Moreover, the abundance of gliofilaments and desmosomes leads us to suggest that mechanical support might be an important function for the astroglial cells in the barbel spinal cord.

    Notes: Summary The oxidative polymorphism of debrisoquine (DBQ) has been determined in 89 patients with colo-rectal cancer and in 556 normal control subjects. Four patients and 34 controls, with a metabolic ratio 〉12.6, were classified as poor metabolisers of DBQ (n.s.). No difference was found in the distribution of the frequencies of the MR of DBQ between patients and controls. It is concluded that polymorphic oxidation of DBQ is not related to the risk of developing colo-rectal cancer in human beings.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si riportano le prove sperimentali di oscillazioni periodiche, e successivamente di aperiodicità (turbolenza) in uno strato di fluido scaldato dal di sotto, e con la superficie libera (effetto Marangoni). Mediante fresatura di canali sulla parte inferiore del coperchio della cella, si forza una modulazione spaziale di flusso termico che vincola i moti a due dimensioni. All'aumentare del gradiente di temperatura, si hanno inizialmente oscillazioni periodiche a 8 mHz, successivamente compare una seconda frequenza, piú bassa di un fattore 30, infine si ha un comportamento aperiodico che segna la nascita del regime turbolento. Le oscillazioni non interessano tutta la superficie del fluido, ma sono localizzate nello spazio.
    Abstract: Резюме Рассматриваются осцилляторные и хаотические неустойчивости на свободной поверхности слоя жидкости, нагреваемого снизу. Рассматриваемая система находится в двумерном состоянии за счет пространственной модуляции потока тепла на свободную поверхность. При увеличении градиентов температур в системе возникают осцилляции, периодические во времени, первоначально с частотой 8 мГц, а затем со второй частотой, которая меньше первой в 30 раз, и в итоге возникает апериодическое поведение, соответствующее началу турбулентного режима. Области осцилляций локализованы в пространстве.
    Notes: Summary We report the observation of oscillatory and chaotic instabilities on a fluid layer with a free surface, heated from below. The system is driven in a bidimensional state by a spatial modulation of the heat flux on the free surface. For increasing temperature gradients the system yields oscillations periodic in time, initially at a frequency of 8 mHz, then with a second frequency lower by a ratio 30 and eventually with an aperiodic behaviour corresponding to the onset of turbulent regime. The oscillatory regions are localized in space.

    Notes: A series of experiments were performed to study further the effect of supplementing corn with whole soybeans processed in a batch home process and in a continuous industrial operation on chemical composition, presence of antiphysiological substances and protein quality of tortillas. Variables studied with the conventional home cooking process included levels of whole soybeans from 0-20%, cooking times at atmospheric pressure and 96°C from 0-90 min at a constant corn-to-soybean ratio of 85:15 and lime concentration of 0, 1 and 2%. In the industrial process a 90:10 mixture of corn to whole soybeans was used, and processing conditions were those normally employed for corn alone. Although addition of whole soybeans to corn increased total protein and fat content, both the PER and weight data suggest that the optimum amount of soybeans to add to maize falls between 8 and 12%. Levels of soybeans above 12%, did not significantly improve PER any further. Antiphysiological factors were inactivated after 30 min of cooking independent of lime concentration in the home process. These factors were also inactivated in the industrial process as measured chemically and by biological assays. The study demonstrated the feasibility of producing an enriched tortilla flour at the industrial scale, which besides containing a higher protein content and quality, also provides an increased amount of calories to the consumer.
