Notes: Summary The accurate measurement of the size of skin wounds and ulceration is important for comparing the efficiency of treatment modalities and for monitoring progress in the individual patient. Although various methods of differing sophistication are in use, many of the common simpler techniques lack accuracy and reliability. We describe a new technique of ulcer measurement which uses video image recording, capture and computer analysis. A method of correcting for limb convexity in a two-dimensional image is presented. The method has an overall accuracy of 1–82% and a clinical precision of 3–41%, both of which are significantly better than acetate tracings or photographic methods. The technique is simple and rapid, and once established it incurs minimal ongoing costs.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to examine sex and race differences in improvement after 6 weeks of phenothiazine or placebo treatment among newly-admitted, acutely-ill schizophrenic patients. The following results were obtained. 1. Although patients on drug treatment improved more than patients receiving placebo in both sexes, the drug-placebo difference was larger for females than for males. a) On placebo treatment males improved markedly more than female patients. b) On drug treatment females improved slightly but significantly more than males. 2. Although more improvement was obtained in both white and Negro patients under drug treatment than under placebo, there was a greater drug-placebo difference among the white patients than the Negro patients. However, the results were less consistent than those on sex differences. a) On placebo treatment Negroes improve more than whites. b) Under drug treatment no race differences were detected. 3. Race differences under placebo were slightly more evident in ward behavior observed by the nurses than in psychopathology seen by the doctors during the interview. 4. A tentative interpretation of the results is offered in terms of an interaction between factors of genetic predisposition and psychological stress; i.e., improvers on placebo are those whose etiology is more highly loaded on psychological stress factors, and improvers on drug have higher loadings on genetic factors. The interpretation implies greater psychological stress in the etiology of males than females, and of Negroes than whites.

Notes: Abstract This study was performed to determine the difference, if any, between serum and plasma levels of the tricyclic antidepressant drugs imipramine and desipramine. Serum and plasma samples were drawn simultaneously from patients taking either of these drugs. Statistical analysis indicated no difference in the drug levels; that is, serum and plasma levels were identical.

Notes: Abstract Performance measures (such as reaction time, perceptual constancy, or word associations) can conceivably contribute to a better understanding of drug action than can behavior ratings. The reason is that they offer a greater opportunity to define and delineate behavior than do behavior ratings. In spite of a plethora of measures which are presumed to be aspects of schizophrenic deficit, less is known about drug effects on such performance measures than on sympton and behavior ratings. Difficulties with measuring performance deficit in schizophrenia arise when one wishes to separate the effects of practice, test difficulty, motivation to perform, and ability to follow test instructions from the performance function being measured. Few tests have survived or undergone replication studies. Perhaps the single outstanding exception is reaction time. Some tests show that relatively few of the patients have pathological scores. Rarely are the standard psychometric characteristics of these tests reported. The questions before this study group were: (a) What is our ability at the present time to specify some performance deficit measures in schizophrenia; and (b) considering the small number of performance measures that can be included in any single study, what are the research strategies that should be adopted?

Notes: Abstract A battery of performance tests was administered to acutely ill schizophrenic patients prior to treatment and repeatedly during a 26-week course of treatment with one of three phenothiazines (acetophenazine, chlorpromazine or fluphenazine). Included were measures of simple reaction-time, cognitive stimulus generalization, sway suggestibility, definition of affectively toned words and subjective uncertainty. Each of these measures were chosen to reflect a specific aspect of schizophrenic deficit or dysfunction. Changes in performance over time and correlations with symptom rating scales of psychopathology presumably tapping the same schizophrenic dysfunctions were examined. Most changes in performance occured between the initial and first repeated testing. Correlations with clinical ratings were seen primarily in symptoms of withdrawal and cognitive disturbance.

Notes: Hartree-Fock wave functions for the He and Be isoelectronic sequences of ions are calculated using orbitals which are linear combinations of simple exponential functions. By a full optimization of the exponents and coefficients close approximations to the HartreeFock energies were obtained. To the same order of accuracy the resulting Hartree-Fock orbitals require fewer basis functions than used previously. A number of difficulties which arise in the numerical procedures as the size of the basis set is increased are analysed in detail. Similar results are obtained for the Li sequence using the Unrestricted HartreeFock method with and without projection.
