Summary (L) 1. The technics ofC. H. Lea, K. Täufel andJ. Köchling, H. andH. Schmalfuß, D. H. Wheeler and other authors as well as ours have been checked in order to determine the active oxygen in oils and fats. 2. The quantity of potassium iodide necessary for use in theLea method and in ours has been fixed. 3. The different ways to obtain the values of active oxygen according toLea, H. andH. Schmalfuß and ours have been compared. They revealed that the results according to theLea method differ from each other for the same oil when the length and the intensity of the heating vary, of which conditions an accurate reproduction is impossible. Our experiences at room temperature gave us the results which are the nearest to each other. 4. It has been checked that in this method, active oxygen leads to free iodine of which a great fraction is lost. This explains the low values obtained. A research is going on to free the value of active oxygen from the perturbation due to loss of iodine. 5. In spite of this loss of iodine, our technic makes it possible to measure the rancidity of oils and fats and to establish a comparison.
