Notes: Abstract The participation of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in a IgE-mediated cutaneous reaction in WBB6F1-W/Wv (W/Wv), mast cell deficient, mice and the effect of prednisolone on this cutaneous reaction were investigated. Mice were passively sensitized by an intravenous injection of monoclonal anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) IgE, and their ears challenged epicutaneously with dinitrofluorobenzene 24 h later. The cutaneous reaction estimated by ear thickness reached a peak 48–72h after the antigen challenge. A monoclonal anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α antibody inhibited the IgE-mediated cutaneous reaction. An increase of TNF-α mRNA was demonstrated 4h after the application of antigen by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The injection of recombinant murine TNF-α induced a cutaneous reaction which peaked at 24 h in nonsensitized mice. Prednisolone at doses of 3 to 10 mg/kg clearly inhibited the IgE-mediated cutaneous reaction, however, it did not affect the expression of TNF-α-mRNA. Prednisolone at doses of 1 to 10 mg/kg clearly inhibited the TNF-α-induced cutaneous reaction. These results suggest that TNF-α plays a role in the IgE-mediated cutaneous reaction in W/Wv mice and that prednisolone inhibits the cutaneous reaction at least in part by inhibiting the action of TNF-α.

Notes: Abstract. Background: To clarify the radiographic characteristics of intractable gastric ulcers with H2-receptor antagonists. Methods: The radiographic findings at the time of starting treatment were compared between 42 patients with gastric ulcers that did not heal within eight weeks of starting treatment with H2-receptor antagonists (the intractable group) and 58 patients whose ulcers healed within the eight-week period (the tractable group). Results: The following radiographic findings in the intractable group were observed at a significantly higher incidence than those in the tractable group and included: an ulcer located on the angle, linear ulcers, a greater depth, an uneven mound surrounding an ulcer, prominent folds' convergence, an overhanging gastric mucosa, an irregular ulcer base, a shortening of the lesser curvature and a U-shaped deformity of the angle. A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the following three factors had a significant and independent delaying effect on healing: a U-shaped deformity of the angle, an uneven mound surrounding an ulcer and prominent folds' convergence. The relative risk of these factors were 12.7, 14.4 and 12.5, respectively. Conclusions: Intractable gastric ulcer with H2-receptor antagonists can be predicted based on the characteristic radiographic findings at the start of treatment.

Notes: Abstract Scanning tunneling microscopy is applied for the first time to an atomic-resolution investigation of the 4×2 and 4×6 phases on a gallium-rich GaAs(001) surface obtained by molecular-beam epitaxy and migration-enhanced epitaxy. A unified structural model is proposed with consideration of the results of experiments and first-principles calculations of the total energy. In this model the 4×2 phase consists of two Ga dimers in the top layer and a Ga dimer in the third layer, and the 4×6 phase is matched to periodically arranged Ga clusters at the corners of a 4×6 unit cell on top of the 4×2 phase.

Notes: Abstract Scanning tunneling microscopy and reflection high-energy electron diffraction under ultrahigh vacuum conditions were used to make an in situ study of atomic structures at the surface of an InAs/GaAs heterostructure grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. It was observed that the deposition of approximately 0.3 ML of indium on an arsenic-enriched GaAs(001)-2 × 4 surface leads to the formation of the 4 × 2 phase while the deposition of 0.6 ML indium leads to the appearance of a new 6 × 2 reconstruction. It is shown that layer-by-layer two-dimensional epitaxial growth of InAs on GaAs(001) as far as 13 monolayers can only be achieved if the growth front reproduces the 4 × 2 or 6 × 2 symmetry of the substrate and models of 4 × 2 and 6 × 2 reconstructions are proposed. Atomic-resolution images of faceted planes on the surface of three-dimensional islands in an InAs/GaAs(001) system were obtained for the first time and structural models of these were developed.

Notes: Configuration interaction calculation for σ- and π-electron contributions to the nuclear spin–spin coupling constants in acetylene and ethylene molecules is presented. The calculation is performed by the sum-over-states configuration interaction (SOS-CI) method with the two kinds of electron correlation approximations, which use the singly and doubly excited configuration interaction (SD-CI) calculation for the ground state and use the S-CI or SD-CI calculation for the excited triplet states. Quantitative agreement between the calculated and experimental coupling constants is not good, but the π-electron contribution Jπ shows the same trends for all the used basis sets and two approximations of electron correlation. Jπ contributes negligibly to the one-bond coupling constants 1JCC and 1JCH, but it makes important contributions to the two-bond coupling constants 2JHH and 2JCH.
