Notes: Summary Spirulina platensis has been grown in an outdoor pilot production unit, with an exposed surface area of 450 m2, on a medium consisting of raw domestic sewage supplemented with sodium bicarbonate and nitrate or urea fertilizer. The chemical composition and yield of the biomass grown on sewage-nitrate was comparable to that grown on synthetic medium. The protein content was much lower in the alga cultivated in sewage-urea medium.

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 gives the mean water-table levels on July 1 of each year, from 1940 to 1950, just before the beginning of the monsoons. This period is selected to be suitable as the water would reach a stable level just before the monsoons start8. The trends in the rise of the water-table, however, remain ...

Notes: Summary A method for cultivatingSpirulina platensis in domestic raw sewage, coupled with pisciculture and water reclamation in an integrated recycling system, has been standardized. The alga is grown in an indigenously designed open-air pilot production unit consisting of 4 concrete basins with a total surface area of 450 m2. The harvesting and processing methods are based on simple filtration and sun drying. Extensive bench and field experiments have made it possible to produce pure blooms of AfricanSpirulina in sewage, using sodium bicarbonate and nitrate, and employing a fertilizing schedule which replenishes nitrogen withdrawn from the medium by the alga. Although urea and several ammoniacal nitrogen sources have been tried, the best source of protein-inducing nitrogen for mass cultivation ofSpirulina appears to be nitric nitrogen.

Notes: Abstract Apomorphine provokes pecking and emesis in pigeons. These effects are mediated through activation of dopamine receptors. In the present paper the effect of apomorphine on the body temperature was studied and an attempt made to determine whether the receptors mediating pecking, emesis, thermoregulatory effects, etc. were similar or different in their transmitter reactivity. Apomorphine was injected by either an intravenous or intracerebroventricular route. It produced dosedependent pecking and hypothermia. Pecking occurred in the form of a syndrome comprised of preening and visual exploratory movements of the head preceding and following a period of pecking. Large intraventricular doses produced emesis, vocalization, and opisthotonus. When apomorphine was injected intravenously, the dose required was smaller than that required by intraventricular route, suggesting that the receptors involved are located away from the ventricular surface. The reverse was true for hypothermia. The effects of apomorphine were prevented by the dopamine receptor-blocking substance pimozide, but were unaffected by the adrenoceptor-blocking substances phenoxybenzamine and propranolol. Pecking alone was suppressed by 5-HT and facilitated by cyproheptadine. The results indicate that the activation of dopamine receptors mediates the different apomorphine responses, of which only pecking is modulated by activation of tryptamine receptors.

Notes: Summary The composition of algal flora and the periodicity of algae in raw and stabilized sewage have been investigated. 36 genera and 70 species of algae are reported. Members of Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta predominate in raw sewage, and there is little variation in the algal flora in different seasons. There is a marked and rapid change in the algal flora of stabilized sewage as compared to raw sewage. Members of Chlorococcales ultimately become dominant in stabilized sewage.

Notes: Abstract The present communication deals with the observations made on the morphology, reproduction and cytology ofUlothrix zonata (Weber & Mohr)Kütz. in culture. The alga displays a remarkable phenotypic plasticity in nature as well as in culture. The present study provides additional evidence of karyology in support ofLokhorst andVroman's treatment ofU. zonata which merges a number of earlier described species in it. The cytological details and chromosome number (n = 10) determined for the Indian isolates ofU. zonata agree with those ofSarma for the British material.

Notes: A small series of organosilicon compounds were screened for efficacy against the housefly Musca domestica. The activity of organosilicon compounds is attributed to the silicon atom, the presence of halogens and the alkyl groups.
