Notes: Summary A group of 52 patients presenting at an outpatient unit for anxiety disorders were included consecutively in a prospective 2-year follow-up study. Patients were administered to a structured interview for DSM-III-R diagnoses, a follow-up interview (LIFE), and various other ratings. Sociodemographic and illness-history characteristics, levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as psychosocial impairment, were evaluated at baseline and follow-up and compared between patients with panic disorder only and patients with panic disorder and concomitant depressive disorders at index assessment. Cross-sectional and longitudinal differences between patients with panic disorder only and patients with panic disorder and concomitant depression have been found, indicating that patients with comorbid conditions are more severely ill and have a less favorable outcome. For the total sample, however, the 2-year outcome was better than that reported in many other follow-up studies.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Interpersonal processes between therapist and patient are the means to achieve lasting psychological changes. The model of Cyclic Maladaptive Pattern and Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (CMP/SASB) is recommended. It successfully operationalizes patients' pathology, the treatment process and its outcome (PTO-congruence). The prototypical cyclic maladaptive relationship patterns of a patient are described akin to a story. The persons's interpersonal expectations, his/her behavior toward others, their behavior toward him/her and his/her beliefs about him/herself determine each other. By translating these into SASB terms, the CMP categories are recorded more generally and comparably. SASB classifies all interpersonal behaviors on three levels of relating to self and others (transitive focus, intransitive focus and introject focus). The interpersonal spae of each focus consists of two basic dimensions, affiliation-hostility and enmeshment (control/submission vs. granting or taking autonomy). This is explained by a few clinical examples. Typical, favorable and unfavorable, communication forms are described. The level of introject inherent in both models signifies one's way of treating oneself based on internalized relationship experiences. Personality disorders are considered as normal psychological reactions to traumatizing surroundings. Later, these beliefs are hard to extinguish and, as self-fulfilling prophecy, they prevent new, more benign relationship experiences.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Two different therapists treated two patients with anxiety symptoms using short-term psychodynamic therapy. The transcribed and coded verbatim protocols were evaluated by process analysis, looking in particular at complex interactions. For content analysis, specifically those text passages where therapist and/or patient were discussing the time-limitation of therapy were selected. Both therapies were successful according to clinical criteria. The psychotherapeutic-technical success and failure criteria were differentiated according in the model of the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) and related to patients’ cyclic maladaptive patterns (CMP). The use of the SASB method and its consequences for psychotherapeutic training are discussed.
