Notes: [Auszug] The controlled fabrication of very small structures at scales beyond the current limits of lithographic techniques is a technological goal of great practical and fundamental interest. Important progress has been made over the past few years in the preparation of ordered ensembles of metal and ...

Notes: Abstract The intercalation of bisulphate ion in graphite has been studied. Oxidation occurs in two stages, at 0.9 V and 1.8 V versus NHE, but the formation of thermally expandable compounds is associated with the second oxidation process. The first oxidation process is associated with the formation of a lower order of intercalation compound. The transport of HSO 4 − between the graphite planes is diffusion controlled and the diffusion coefficient value estimated is in the range of 0.3 to 2.8×10−6 cm2 s−1 which indicates that the intercalated ions can move quite freely between the graphite planes. The oxidation of the graphite flakes in a fluidized bed electrode was studied by AC and voltammetric techniques. Good interparticle contact was achieved when a slight compressive load was applied and fluidization resulted in a large decrease of the solid phase resistance of the bed electrode.

Notes: Abstract The solution of the Nernst-Planck equation for the electropolishing of metals is presented. The migration and diffusion equations are solved for the cases where the metal ion is transported independently of the anion of the electrolyte and when ion pairing occurs. It is concluded that under polishing conditions, the surface concentration of acid is decreased by the salt solubility. It is shown that this has important practical consequences for defining the conditions required for electropolishing and in the selection of the acid used.

Notes: Abstract The effect of potential cycling on the growth of oxide layers on steel is analysed. It is shown that the redox reactions in the oxide layers formed are diffusion controlled and it is proposed that the transport of OH− is the limiting step of growth. The relationship of these results to ac corrosion is discussed and it is shown that alternating currents flowing through structures can accelerate the corrosion rate if the potential excursion encompasses the reduction of an ‘inner’ oxide layer, not only by the growth of hydrated oxide layers, but also by the observed enhancement of the electrocatalytic properties towards oxygen reduction of the oxide layers formed on cycling.
