Notes: Abstract  A new derivatization method for aromatic amines is presented based on the bromination of the aromatic ring system in an acetic acid medium to yield bromo derivatives. The derivatization method is very simple to perform and overcomes several problems common in the analysis of polar aromatic amines. The derivatives are easy to extract with pentane and can be separated with gas chromatography. Due to the introduction of the electron withdrawing bromo substituents sensitive detection using an electron capture detector is possible. The method was used to investigate the contents of amino- and aminonitrotoluenes in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant.

Notes: Abstract  Aminobenzoic acids are of major interest in clinical analysis, but their determination in environmental samples has been rarely done. Therefore a method for the determination of 10 aminobenzoic acids in water has been developed, using high-performance liquid chromatography with combined diode array and fluorescence detection. A separation of the analytes has been achieved with a buffer pH 3/methanol gradient. The general elution order has been m-substituted〈p-subst.〈o-subst. aminobenzoic acids. UV and fluorescence data are presented. In a highly polluted water sample of the former ammunition plant Stadtallendorf/Hessen, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 2-amino- benzoic acid and 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid have been detected. After passing a charcoal filter, only the concentration of 4-aminobenzoic acid in a sample from the same site has been above the detection limit. Besides the ten analytes investigated, several unknown compounds have been present in the samples.

Notes: Abstract An analytical method for the determination of aromatic amines in water is introduced that uses iodination with a Sandmeyer-like reaction to replace the amino group by iodine in aqueous solution. The non-polar derivatives are extracted with pentane or toluene, separated with gas chromatography and sensitively detected with an ECD. Thirteen major metabolites of nitroaromatic explosives were investigated. The method was used to analyze these metabolites in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant. The results are compared with the derivatization of aromatic amines via bromination of the aromatic ring.

Notes: Abstract The extraction of amphoteric aromatic amines from water samples is difficult because of their high polarity. For the enrichment of aminobenzoic acids and aminotoluenesulfonic acids with solid-phase extraction, graphitized carbon black (GCB) was investigated. With few exceptions, the 12 analytes studied were extracted with recoveries 〉 60% at neutral or basic pH, whereas at pH 3 low recoveries were obtained. Addition of salt caused a decrease of about 50% in recoveries, addition of standard humic acid a decrease of about 20%. The capacity of GCB cartridges was determined with the breakthrough volume for 4-aminobenzoic acid at different concentrations to be 0.5–1% (w/w).

Notes: Summary For improved determination of aromatic amines by gas chromatography and detection with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) a derivatization method based on the bromination of the aromatic ring in an acetic acid medium was developed. In general, all free ortho and para-positions relative to the amino group undergo electrophilic substitution. Separation of at least 30 compounds in a single chromatographic run in 30 min is possible. With this method, 56 aromatic amines were studied and only in 6 cases were no derivatives obtained. Quantitation limits determined from calibration data are 1.2–40 μg L−1 for a 100 mL sample and an injection volume of 1 μL. Previous experiments suggest that both sample and injection volume may be increased to lower the quantitation limit.
