Notes: Abstract: The Nagel scaling and the modified scaling procedure proposed recently by Dendzik et al. have been applied to broadband dielectric data on two glass-forming liquids (glycerol and propylene carbonate) and three plastic crystals (ortho-carborane, meta-carborane, and 1-cyano-adamantane). Our data extend the upper limit of the abscissa range to considerably higher values than in previously published analyses. At the highest frequencies investigated, deviations from a single master curve show up which are most pronounced in the Dendzik scaling plot. The loss curves of the plastic crystals do not scale in the Nagel plot, but they fall onto a separate master curve in the Dendzik plot. In addition, we address the question of a possible divergence of the static susceptibility near the Vogel-Fulcher temperature. For this purpose, the low-temperature evolution of the high-frequency wing of the dielectric loss peaks is investigated in detail. No convincing proof for such a divergence can be deduced from the present broadband data.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary After experimental hypertension produced by renal artery constriction in the rat, we found not only intensified granulation in the area of the juxtaglomerular apparatus on the side of the clamped artery (enhancement of Hartroft's juxtaglomerular index), but also a significant increase in macula densa. The latter is expressed by a significant increase in the following morphometrically determined macula values: macula count (number of macula sections per 100 glomeruli), macula cell count (number of macula cells per 100 glomeruli), macula index (number of macula cells per macula section). The findings suggest that under the conditions of hypertension following renal artery constriction, both components of the juxtaglomerular apparatus, i.e. granulated cells and macula densa, undergo an increase in function.

Notes: Summary B-Cell-allo-antigen was demonstrated on lymphoblasts of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and on 14 permanent growing lymphoblastoid cell-lines. Pooled sera of 4 selected multiparas and a rabbit antiserum were used as specific antisera. Antigen was more effectively detected with heterologous antibodies than with human antisera. Primary lymphoblasts were characterized by B-cell-allo-antigen and lack of membrane immunoglobulins and Fc-receptors on the same cell. The quality of remission, i.e. the early diagnosis of relapse was better surveyed by immunological characterization than by cytological assessment. The bone marrow was examined in 8 patients with initial leukemia, in 13 patients with partial remission and in 30 patients in complete hematological remission. A striking discrepancy between immunological and cytological examination was observed in the bone marrow 4 weeks after initial anti-leukemic chemotherapy. At that time an increased number of blast-typed cells could still be counted in the immunological evaluation, although the cytological evaluation revealed already a complete hematological remission.

Notes: Abstract The glycaemic response to commonly ingested breakfast with different glycaemic index (cornflakes, white bread, dark rye bread and muesli) was investigated in 14 children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The blood glucose response after cornflakes was significantly higher than after the other breakfasts, whereas the areas under the blood glucose curve were not statistically different. We observed no difference in blood glucose rise between the other breakfast types. Conclusion Postprandial blood glucose measurements after meals with high glycaemic index may be useful in order to minimize the postprandial rise in blood glucose.

Notes: Abstract Acute suppurative thyroiditis is a rare disease, particularly in childhood. We present a case with recurrent acute suppurative thyroiditis due to a pyriform sinus fistula originating from the fourth branchial pouch. The typical symptoms of a piriform sinus fistula are recurrent left-sided pain and swelling of the neck with signs of acute bacterial inflammation. Diagnosis should be made by high resolution ultrasound, barium meal studies and endoscopic examination. During acute exacerbations treatment with antibiotics is indicated, but permanent cure can only be attained by complete fistulectomy.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether insulin application by jet injector is less painful than by needle. Pain was scored by 41 diabetic and seven healthy volunteers after injections with both methods. Injections by jet were no less painful than those by needle but produced several local side-effects.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate environmental risk factors in the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus in a population-based case-control study. Parents of all patients with manifestation of type 1 diabetes between 1989 and 1994 in Vienna were asked to complete a questionnaire (n = 114). Control children (n = 495), matched for age and sex, were randomly recruited from all schools in Vienna. Fathers of diabetic children were significantly older at the time their children were born than fathers of control children (P = 0.015). Children with diabetes were more likely to be second- or third-born children (P 〈 0.05) and fewer went to kindergarten than the control group children (P = 0.007). No significant difference in duration of gestation, percentage of delivery by caesarean section, birth weight or length was found. Neonatal jaundice was more often observed in the patient group (P = 0.038). Breast feeding was reported by 82.7% of mothers of diabetic children and by 81% of mothers of control children, and the duration of breast feeding was longer in patients than in controls (n.s.). Conclusion In our study, the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus was associated with higher paternal age and neonatal jaundice. No correlation could be found with dietary intake of cow's milk products in early infancy, vaccination and other environmental factors.
