Notes: Using numerical simulation techniques, the transmission and reflection coefficients, or S parameters, for left-handed metamaterials are calculated. Metamaterials consist of a lattice of conducting, nonmagnetic elements that can be described by an effective magnetic permeability μeff and an effective electrical permittivity cursive-epsiloneff, both of which can exhibit values not found in naturally occurring materials. Because the electromagnetic fields in conducting metamaterials can be localized to regions much smaller than the incident wavelength, it can be difficult to perform accurate numerical simulations. The metamaterials simulated here, for example, are based on arrays of split ring resonators (SRRs), which produce enhanced and highly localized electric fields within the gaps of the elements in response to applied time dependent fields. To obtain greater numerical accuracy we utilize the newly developed commercially available code MICROWAVE STUDIO, which is based on the finite integration technique with the perfect boundary approximation. The simulation results are in agreement with published experimental results for the frequencies and bandwidths of the propagation and stop bands associated with the various structures. We further analyze the properties of an individual SRR, and find the dependence of the resonant frequency on the SRR radius, ring thickness, inner/outer radial gap, azimuthal gap, electrical permittivity, and magnetic permeability of the components' materials. Comparison with previously published analytical estimates shows only approximate agreement with the simulation results. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Anhand von Gewebsproben aus den Placentonen reifer menschlicher Placenten wird die ultrastrukturelle Lokalisation der alkalischen Phosphatase (a.P.) untersucht.
Notes: Summary The ultrastructural localization of alcaline phosphatase (a.p.) is studied in placental villi from central and peripheral areas of human term-placental placentons. Our earlier light-microscopical results [7] concerning the different activity of a.p. in the two areas are confirmed. It is demonstrated by ultrahistochemical methods, that villi of the central region show activity of a.p. mainly in the membrane of superficial microvilli. Villi, situated in the periphery, showing besides apical syncytial a.p. activity alsobasal enzyme activity in light microscopical studies, are demonstrated to possess a.p.-activity also in the membrane ofbasal syncytial microvilli. The meaning of this membrane-situated activity of a.p. for the transport of substrates is discussed.

Notes: Summary The examinations presented are based on earlier histological, histochemical, ultra-histochemical and biochemical studies about regional differences of placental villi in the center and the periphery of the placentons (materno-fetal circulation-units) of mature human placentas. In this study the question was followed up whether the morphological “immature” imposing villi lying in the centers of the circulation-units are immature like the villi of placentas of earlier stages of pregnancy also referring their proliferation. Autoradiograms were made from specimens of placentas of 38.–41. weak of uncomplicated pregnancies. The degree of nuclear labeling was higher in the villi situated in the center of the placentons. By these findings the centers of the placentons are interpreted to be not areas of a lower metabolism — possibly conditioned by maternal blood flow — but regions of growth and regeneration. The results comply well with our up to date conception of formation and growth of the placentons.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Nach dem Prinzip der örtlichen Wärmeleitmessung wurden Durchblutungsmessungen an Kaninchenplazenten durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary Placental blood-flow rates in rabbits were measured by the indirect method of local apparent conductivity. In our experiments, hypertension was produced by injection or infusion of hypertensive drugs. As a result of hypertension we observed a marked decrease in placental blood flow. Vasoconstriction seems to be the pathophysiologic mechanism causing the reduced blood flow rate. Accordingly, the placenta may not be considered as a “priviledged organ“ in circulatory regulations. In our experiments, placental ischemia subsequently to ligatures did not produce hypertension so that the production of a placental pressor-substance could not be demonstrated. If we assume a circulus vitiosus hypertension-placental ischemia-hypertension, the hypertension seems to be the primary cause.

Notes: Summary In an earlier paper [9] it was demonstrated that there are histological differences of placental villi within maternofetal circulation units. Using histochemical and biochemical methods for identification of alcaline phosphatase it can now be demonstrated that those morphological differences also manifest themselves functionally. The histochemical study shows a strikingly lower activity of alcaline phosphatase in the syncytium of the centrally situated placental villi. According to the cellular localisation it can be demonstrated that in the central villi activity is mainly situated in the syncytial brush border whilst in peripheral villi activity is also found in basal region of syncytium. Biochemical investigation reveals the same results; activity is found always lowest in the center of the circulation units. The results can be interpretated in the way that the center of the circulation unit is the region of growth whilst in the peripheral areas main resorption — and exchange functions take place between mother and foetus.
