Notes: Parameterization with respect to the aqueous reflux ratio has been carried out for the steady-state analysis of a tower to dehydrate secbutanol using disecondary butyl ether as the entrainer. With an equilibrium-stage model, singularities are observed as the second liquid phase is introduced on the trays and regions of steady-state multiplicity are demonstrated. Furthermore, a critical aqueous reflux ratio, in the vicinity of which two liquid phases are introduced on most of the trays, varies only slightly with the number of trays in the tower. The model predicts that the product purities and recoveries remain high using one-third of the trays in the industrial SBA-II tower. Bifurcation analysis for a single stage does not explain these observations, and the effect of recycle is suspected.

Notes: A model and algorithm are presented for the separation of mixtures where the phase distribution on the trays is extremely uncertain, as it occurs when the mixtures have two partially-miscible binary pairs and a minimum-boiling ternary azeotrope. Included are an algorithm for the consistent initialization of index-I differential/algebric equations, a novel algorithm for branch switching when the phase distribution changes at a real bifurcation point, and a reliable algorithm for phase stability analysis. Open-loop responses are presented for the dehydration of secbutanol with disecbutylether in single-stage, 12-tray, and 33-tray separators. These simulation results for the 33-tray tower are in qualitative agreement with experimental measurements for the ARCO SBA-II tower.

Notes: Abstract This research is an effort towards providing higher level Design for Environment (DFE) tools for a broad industrial region. Issues ranging from the levels immediately above existing design tools, to the envisioned highest level for a broad geographical region are discussed. A tool for the regional planning of the DFE activities is proposed, considering a model construction based on material flows across the industry. The Multi-Lifecycle approach is supported by organizing the input/output flows for industries, potentially utilizing waste material, side products and recycling. Capitalizing on the conceptual integration of the design and process activities, an Abstract Design Environment is used for the design of the basically process oriented material flow tool. Within the context, the relations among design, process and flow-modeling concepts are discussed.

Notes: The rheology of a variety of polyolefin resins, and resin blends, has been examined under conditions of constant strain rate elongation. These include high, low, and linear low density polyethylene, as well as polypropylene, commercially modified polypropylene, and elastomer blends with polypropylene. Two distinctly different classes of behavior are apparent in the viscosity growth patterns during uniaxial extension. Some resins display unbounded stress growth even at low strain rates. Others quickly attain a time independent value of extensional viscosity even at increased strain rates. The former behavior is identified with favorable blow molding behavior, while the latter was characteristic of resins unsuitable for such processing. The class of elongation behavior depends not only on resin type, but may be influenced by molecular weight distribution or blend morphology.
