Notes: Summary Cystadenolymphomas are a special kind of salivary gland tumours with an epithelial and a stromal part. Mast cells, which in this tumour were only rarely mentioned, were observed in large amounts in the stroma and in the epithelium. This type of cell is present especially in those cystadenolymphomas rich in epithelial parts. The possible significance of this observation is discussed.

Notes: Summary Morphological diagnosis of cytomegaly is based on macroscopic, histopathologic and cytologic criteria. The macropathology of generalized cytomegaly in infants is characterized by cerebral lesions (micro- and polygyria, microencephalia, hydrocephalus, intracranial calcifications), hepato- and splenomegaly, jaundice, hemorrhagic diathesis and anemia. Histopathologically, an interstitial lymphocytic inflammation of organs is found, associated with parenchymal destruction, alterations of organ structure and occurrence of giant cells. Salivary glands, kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas, thyroid glands, adrenal glands, gastro-intestinal tract and brain are most frequently affected. The cytodiagnosis of cytomegaly is based on three characteristic findings: cell enlargement with an unchanged nucleo cytoplasmic ratio, owl-eye nucleus with nucleus-inclusion body and cytoplasmic inclusions.Intra vitam typical giant cells are observed in saliva, urine, liquor, gastric juice and in biopsy material from liver or parotid gland. These are found rarely in surgical specimens of other organs. Electronmicroscopically the inclusion bodies represent DNS-viruses with polyhedral configuration. The multiplication of infectious viruses takes place in the nucleus.

Notes: Summary Punch biopsy was carried out in 32 cases in which thyroid gland changes were sonographically classified as being of homogeneously normal or of homogeneously low echogenicity. Mean follicle lumen size was morphometrically determined from the histological sections. This produced a significant, positive correlation between echogenicity and follicle size. The mean follicle lumen diameter in so-called echonormal structures was 67 µm (SD±23 µm), and (SD±8 µm) in low-echogenic lesions. Thus normal echogenicity represented a normofollicular or macrofollicular structure, while a low echogenicity pattern indicated a microfollicular or solid tissue structure. The structure of thyroid carcinomas is not homogeneously normofollicular or macrofollicular; in exceptional cases they are such only focally. Therefore the significance of these findings lies in the exclusion of malignancy in the event of homogeneously normal echogenicity.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The ultrastructure of the human salivary gland virus (cytomegalovirus) in a case of generalized cytomegalic inclusion disease was studied electronmicroscopically after combined fixation in formalin and osmic acid and counterstining with potassium permagnate. The giant cells in heart and lungs measured approximately 20µ in diameter and contained approximately 6µ large intranuclear inclusions of virus- and chromatin particles, as well as numerous virus aggregations enclosed in membrane-lined, cytoplasmic vacuoles. The mature virus particles showed an average size of 100 mµ, were enclosed by membranes of 30 Å thickness and showed polygonal, usually hexagonal shapes. All virus particles showed characteristic internal structures with 40 mµ arge nucleoids and capsids of 20–30 mµ thickness. The capsidl was bordered internally and externally by an optically lighter zone and consisted of minute vesicular structures arranged in a cristalline patterns. These structures are considered to be equivalent to the capsomeres seen when using the negative-staining technique. Additionally, vacuoles measuring about 500 mµ in diameter were observed, which were densely filled with 25 Å large, vesicular particles. The virus of cytomegalic inclusion disease belongs to the group of membrane-bounded, medium sized, polyhedral viruses with DNA-nucleoid and capsid with symmetrically arranged capsomeres. Many similarities in ultrastructure exist between the cytomegalovirus and the herpes virus.

Notes: 82 , M = Sc, Y, La) are discussed. The first 13C hyperfine structure has been analyzed in detail and at least seven electronically different groups of carbon atoms could be assigned by simulations of the ESR spectra. The strong similarity of the 13C satellite structure suggests the preference of one cage isomer for the scandium group C82 endohedrals. The geometric structure and the electronic structure of all nine fullerene cage isomers of La@C82 were studied by approximate density-functional-based theoretical calculations. A C3v isomer was found as the most stable one. The manifold of 13C hyperfine coupling constants could be interpreted on the basis of the calculated spin density distributions.

Notes: Efficient intermolecular energy transfer between the C–Br stretching modes ν2 and ν5 of bromoform molecules in the liquid phase has been observed directly in time-resolved experiments applying vibrational pump–probe spectroscopy with picosecond laser pulses. An analysis of results on CHBr3, CDBr3, and an isotopic mixture of both yields a typical time constant of 25±15 ps for this rather efficient, near-resonant intermolecular relaxation channel. Additional new details about the intramolecular pathways of vibrational energy relaxation have been determined for the pure substances. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
