Description / Table of Contents: Summary A Bence-Jones protein was isolated from the urine of two persons with a plasmocytoma. This protein was labelled with131J, and, by intravenous injection, administered to the same test persons, to other persons with a plasmocytoma, to a person with nephrosclerosis, and to two healthy test persons. In all cases studied, the abnormal protein was partly excerted with the urine, partly metabolized inside the organism. The highest metabolic rate was found in healthy test persons. It was shown that the ratio between the excretion quota and metabolization quota was increased in patients with abundant Bence-Jones proteinuria. Furthermore, it is assumed that a certain amount of Bence-Jones protein escapes from the circulation and is retained by the organism's tissues.

Notes: Summary Frequencies of transferrin phenotypes and genes were determined in a sample of 319 randomly selected subjects from the population of Rome. Disc electrophoresis on acrylamide gel columns was adopted for the phenotype identification. A statistical analysis on these and all the data so far collected in other areas of the world would suggest that a high degree of homogeneity is present among white populations, while a certain degree of heterogeneity exists among coloured populations.
