Description / Table of Contents: Summary The inverse gas-chromatography performed in isotherm at 100 °C on polyethyleneterephthalate allows to work over theTg-temperature and consequently the probe can penetrate into the whole polymetric material. The technique is suitable to show the morphologial differences among polyethyleneterephthalate fibers. The gaschromatographic and röntgenographic characterization of commercial fibers and of fibers which have been treated in laboratory allows to put forward a hypothesis of the structural evolution and its influences on the dyeability.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Morphological characterization of highly cristalline PET has been carried out. Yarns were previously orientated by drawing under theTg or by industrial drawing, after that they were thoroughly annealed at a constant length. For the morphological characterization of the samples, X-ray diffractometric techniques, both high and low angle, and isothermal reverse gas-chromatography were used.

Notes: Physical properties of a new polymer blend obtained by mixing poly-D( - )(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), a crystalline polymer with interesting properties of biodegradability and biocompatibility, with uncrystallizable atactic poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were studied. PHB/PECH blends, obtained by casting solution, were analysed by thermomechanical and X-ray analysis, viscoelastic measurements, and on the basis of strength and elongation measurements. It was concluded that the crystalline region of PHB plays an important role of crosslinks, and amorphous PECH filled between the crystalline regions plays a role of plasticizer. A single dynamic loss modulus, corresponding to the glass transition temperature, implies the miscibility between crystalline PHB and amorphous PECH.

Notes: Cellulosic degradation of cotton and flax yarns caused by light, heat and heterogeneous acid-catalyzed hydrolysis was studied. These processes were followed by measuring changes in intrinsic fluidity (1/DPw): two principal stages, characterized by different zero-order kinetics, take place. A relation between changes in intrinsic fluidity with some mechanical properties of the same yarns during the degradation process was found.

Notes: Effects of macromolecular orientation on the crystallization of preoriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments were studied. Infrared spectrophotometry and differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that macromolecular segments in the trans conformation begin to crystallize below the glass transition temperature. Since filaments prepared by stretching at room temperature have different degrees of orientation, it is possible to evidence correlations between crystallization from an anisotropic matrix and the resulting morphology.

Notes: The thermal and mechanical properties of blends, obtained by mixing polyamide 6 (PA6) and an amorphous aromatic copolyamide G21 (ISO nomenclature PA 6I/6T), were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and mechanical tensile tests. Quenched blends show a single glass transition temperature; the Tg-composition trend was interpreted by means of the Gordon-Taylor equation. The half-time of crystal-lization decreases by increasing the G21 content and this indicates a depression of the overall crystallization rate. A small decrease in the equilibrium melting temperature of PA6 in the blends was observed; this finding suggests that the interaction parameter in PA6/G21 blends is probably very small. The dynamic mechanical analysis of crystallized blends suggests the presence of a homogeneous amorphous phase even if the crystallization of PA6 occurred. The tensile mechanical properties reveal that G21 acts as stiffener of PA6. The collected experimental data suggest that PA6 and G21 are miscible in the composition range investigated. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Isotrope Polyethylenterephthalat-Filme zeigten nach Temperung oberhalb 180°C eine Umkehr des Färbeverhaltens und der Lichtechtheit.
Notes: Isotropic poly(ethylene terephthalate) films, when thermally treated above 180°C, showed an inversion in dyeing behaviour as well as in light fastness. Similar results were found with anisotropic samples thermally treated above 150°C. The morphological characterization of the films showed the inversion points to occur always at a crystallinity index of about 0.5, but with larger crystallite dimensions in the anisotropic samples. The phenomenon is interpreted assuming that dye diffusion can be explained by replacing the usual “free volume” model by the “pore” model.

Notes: The morphology of semicrystalline polymeric materials(PETP) was studied by an etching technique and by isothermal inverse gas-chromatography. Using these two techniques the same results for semicrystalline isotropic materials were obtained and these results wer found to depend only on the crystalline fraction. Isothermal inverse gas-chromatography permits an evaluation of the macromolecular orientation while the etching technique shows the same behaviour both for isotropic and anisotropic materials.
