    Notes: An analysis of electronic polarizabilities, interionic potentials, and equilibrium geometries for 20 alkali–halide dimers such as Na2Cl2 is presented. The electronic polarizabilities of ions in dimers have been calculated by taking account of the electrostatic potential due to neighboring ions within the Seitz–Ruffa energy level analysis. The polarizabilities thus obtained for dimers are then used to evaluate the magnitudes of polarization energies and van der Waals dipole–dipole energies. For describing the overlap repulsive potential we have adopted two forms: (i) the revised version of the Born–Mayer potential and (ii) the Harrison form for the overlap repulsive energy. These potentials have been used to obtain the binding energies of monomers as well as dimers, spectroscopic constants of monomers, equilibrium geometries of dimers, and dimerization energies. The results have been discussed and compared with available experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract Atmospheric aerosols are a crucial link in the physical processes, involved in the formation and growth of precipitating clouds. Extensive aerosol measurements in surface air and in the lower troposphere were made at inland and coastal stations of different regions in India. At inland stations, the hygroscopic fraction of the total aerosol content is found to be a useful characteristic for distinguishing between the monsoon and summer airflow, as well as an indicator for a good or a badly developed monsoon. At coastal stations, however, this feature is not observed. Measurements as a function of height brought out that the aerosol varied widely in air over different seasons. During monsoon, the hygroscopic fraction was found highest at the cloud base level and was closely linked to the development of rain. Details of these investigations are presented.

    Notes: Abstract —Efficacy of the global optimisation technique is demonstrated in the inversion of time domain electromagnetic data. Transient EM responses observed using a coincident loops system along several profiles and different time channels over a plate like conducting body are inverted, using very fast simulated annealing (VFSA) as an optimisation tool. Three time channels for each profile are considered in the inversion. Study reveals that only one run of global inversion considering a single multi-channel profile is not enough to resolve all the nine model parameters of a plate-like conducting body. However, the global inversion of a single multi-channel profile with several runs yields a mean model that is quite close to the true model. Considering many profiles and time channels together in the global inversion can yield reliable estimates of all the parameters. Computationally, this is not an efficient procedure. Analysis of the results shows, however, that two distant profiles are enough to yield all the model parameters reliably, even after one run of the global inversion. Both noise-free and noisy synthetic data are used in the inversion. Finally, field data are also inverted to study the performance of the global inversion.

    Notes: Summary Aircraft observations were made on cloud droplet size distribution in 19 cases of seeded warm cumulus clouds in three meteorologically different regions. An examination of the data suggested the following: (i) In all the 5 cases at Bombay (maritime), and in 6 out of the 7 cases at Poona (modified maritime) the values of median volume diameter, maximum cloud droplet size and liquid water content showed increase after seeding as compared to what they were before. The increases noticed in the median volume diameter ranged up to 48% at Bombay and 478% at Poona. The liquid water content and the maximum droplet size respectively increased upward of 56% and 25% at Bombay and 60% and 31% at Poona. (ii) In 4 out of the 7 cloud cases at Rihand (continental), the values of the parameters referred to above showed increase. The median volume diameter increased up to 372%. The liquid water content and the maximum droplet size increased upward of 160% and 66% respectively. (iii) In the cloud cases wherein the values of the parameters decreased after seeding, the decreases noticed ranged up to 94%. (iv) More unstable conditions prevailed on the days when the seeded clouds showed visible rain than on the days when they did not.

    Notes: Summary The development of substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in the goldfish brain was studied by means of the indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique and an antibody to substance P. By 80 h after fertilization, the first SPLI-cell bodies appear in the ventricular zone of the future diencephalon and the first SPLI-fibers appear in the olfactory bulbs. Two days after hatching (which occurs at 100 h after fertilization), SPLI fibers connecting the olfactory bulbs and hypothalamus are seen. In the optic tectum SPLI-fibers appear for the first time 5 days after hatching. In the brain stem, SPLI-cell bodies appear in juvenile animals 40 days after hatching. The highest number and intensity of SPLI-cell bodies and fibers are found in the area postrema. SPLI-cell bodies are also seen in the gustatory nucleus, nucleus ambiguus, reticular formation of the medulla, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and commissural nucleus of Cajal. The significant information gained from the present study is: 1. The rostro-caudal sequence in which the SPLI appears in the developing nuclei of the goldfish brain 2. The reduction of SPLI-cell bodies in some nuclei with age Thus, in the brain stem, SPLI-cell bodies that were labeled in juvenile goldfish were not seen in adults. This might be due to changes in the rate of axonal transport, changes of the SP phenotype during development or cell death. The developmental sequence and relative timing in which SPLI-cell bodies appear in the goldfish, rat and mice are similar.
